National income per capita

Dynamic economy that shares prosperity

Metric

Real net national disposable income (RNNDI) per capita

Why this matters

Real Net National Disposable Income (RNNDI) per capita measures the income available across the economy to spend and save, after inflation, on a per person basis.

This is a broader measure of prosperity than the commonly cited measure of real GDP, since it includes income of Australian residents generated overseas and excludes income of non-residents generated in Australia. It more accurately reflects the average lived experience and prosperity of Australians.

Progress

In 2022-23, RNNDI per capita:

  • increased 0.4% from the previous period (2021-22)
  • increased 1.6% in compound annual growth terms from the 2003-04 period.

RNNDI per capita briefly contracted between 2018-19 and the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-20. Between 2020-21 and 2022-23, it returned to growth, but the rate of growth has been decreasing.
