Measuring What Matters

A wellbeing framework that tracks our progress towards a more healthy, secure, sustainable, cohesive and prosperous Australia

The Australian Government established the Measuring What Matters framework in 2023. Treasury has continuing responsibility for its management, including the selection of indicators and metrics, and embedding the framework in decision-making.

Responsibility for reporting annual updates of the dashboard has been transferred from Treasury to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Measuring What Matters tracks progress towards a more healthy, secure, sustainable, cohesive and prosperous Australia.

Wellbeing frameworks are used internationally to report on progress in an integrated way, moving ‘beyond GDP’.

The 2024 dashboard includes data updates to 42 of 50 indicator pages, with headline metrics updated in 30 of these. Where possible, for indicators with no updates to headline metrics in the 2024 dashboard report, supplementary information has been included to provide contemporary context.

The expanded General Social Survey will increase the number of indicators and metrics updated annually, with data available from this survey in 2026.
