About this release

Data from the monthly Labour Force Survey are released in two stages:

  1. Labour Force, Australia - which contains headline estimates of employment, unemployment, underemployment, participation and hours worked
  2. Labour Force, Australia, Detailed - which contains detailed data not included in the first release

This second release of Labour Force Survey data includes the latest detailed monthly and quarterly data. Some information, including industry, occupation, job duration, and retrenchment, is only available for February, May, August and November.

As a result, in the 'non-quarter' months, the quarterly spreadsheets and datacubes have a different reference period. For example, the May issue contains May monthly and May quarterly data, while the July issue will contain July monthly and May quarterly data.

For more information on the data contained in the first and second releases, see the Survey output section of the Labour Force Survey Methodology page.

Industry and Occupation

The Labour Account is the best source of quarterly industry and sector data. For information on how it provides a better allocation of employed people and their hours based on the characteristics of their employing business, see Industry employment guide

After assessing the usefulness of the four sector tables in this release (tables 26a, 26b, 27 and 28), the ABS has retired these products from December 2024 data onwards.

The ABS is also currently reviewing the usefulness of the market and non-market sector data in Table 21 of the headline Labour Force release.

Modelled labour market regions (SA4)

MRM1 - Modelled estimates of labour force status, by SA4 (ASGS) (February)

The modelled regional labour force estimates in MRM1 have now been extended, with all modelled estimates now available from January 2012 onwards.

The series have been produced using the same Rao-Yu model and most of the same data sources (with the exception of the employed series, with Pay As You Go data from the Australian Tax Office used as an alternative input, until Single Touch Payroll data are available from 2020). For more information, refer to the Labour Force, Australia methodology page and the Regional labour market data guide.

The ABS recommends using the modelled estimates in MRM1 over the direct survey estimates whenever possible in reporting on employment and unemployment rates for regional labour markets.

Labour market regions (SA4)

The ABS has collapsed survey estimates for Townsville and Cairns SA4 regions into Mackay - Isaac - Whitsunday in tables 16, 16b, RM1, RM3, RQ1 and RQ2. All data in Mackay - Isaac - Whitsunday SA4 in these labour market regions tables for February 2025 will represent the three regions combined.

The ABS has also confidentialised Townsville and Cairns SA4 regions in table 16c.
