Economic resilience

Resilient and sustainable nation

Metric

The Atlas of Economic Complexity’s Economic Complexity Index.

Why this matters

More diverse economies are more resilient to shocks, and make countries more able to manage and take advantage of structural shifts. The Economic Complexity Index (ECI) ranking attempts to measure the relative diversity of an economy, compared to other countries. It is calculated based on the diversity of exports a country produces and their abundance, or the number of other countries able to produce them.

Progress

In 2021:

  • Australia was ranked 93rd out of the 133 countries included in the ECI ranking
  • Australia's ranking indicated it had less economic complexity (relative to other countries) than it did in the 2000s, when its ranking ranged from 66 (in 2007) to 81 (in 2009).

A higher ranking indicates greater economic diversity.
