Food retailing

Food retailing rose 0.2% ($34.6m) in June, in seasonally adjusted terms.

By industry subgroup, the seasonally adjusted estimate:

  • rose 0.4% ($41.7m) for Supermarket and grocery stores.
  • fell 0.1% (-$1.1m) for Other specialised food retailing.
  • fell 0.4% (-$6.1m) for Liquor retailing.

Household goods retailing

Household goods retailing rose 1.1% ($62.2m) in June, in seasonally adjusted terms.

By industry subgroup, the seasonally adjusted estimate:

  • rose 2.5% ($52.0m) for Electrical and electronic goods retailing.
  • rose 1.3% ($20.0m) for Furniture, floor coverings, houseware and textile goods retailing.
  • fell 0.5% (-$9.7m) for Hardware, building and garden supplies retailing.

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing rose 0.7% ($19.9m) in June, in seasonally adjusted terms.

By industry subgroup, the seasonally adjusted estimate:

  • rose 0.9% ($18.3m) for Clothing retailing.
  • rose 0.2% ($1.6m) for Footwear and other personal accessory retailing.

Department stores

Department stores rose 1.0% ($18.3m) in June, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Other retailing

Other retailing rose 1.0% ($54.8m) in June, in seasonally adjusted terms.

By industry subgroup, the seasonally adjusted estimate:

  • rose 1.3% ($34.4m) for Other retailing n.e.c..
  • rose 2.8% ($17.4m) for Other recreational goods retailing.
  • rose 0.3% ($6.8m) for Pharmaceutical, cosmetic and toiletry goods retailing.
  • fell 2.3% (-$3.8m) for Newspaper and book retailing.

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services was relatively unchanged ($0.2m) in June, in seasonally adjusted terms.

By industry subgroup, the seasonally adjusted estimate:

  • rose 0.1% ($4.6m) for Cafes, restaurants and catering services.
  • fell 0.2% (-$4.3m) for Takeaway food services.

Online retailing

Total online retailing sales were $4,227.9m in June 2024, in seasonally adjusted terms. Seasonally adjusted online sales rose 1.5 per cent ($62.4m), following a fall of 2.0 per cent (-$83.0m) in May 2024. Seasonally adjusted through-the-year sales are up 7.5 per cent ($294.5m). 

Original online sales were relatively unchanged ($0.4m) in June 2024 compared to a fall of 1.0 per cent at the same time last year. 

In June 2024, food online sales were $1,289.7m and non-food online sales were $2,938.2m, in seasonally adjusted terms. Food sales rose 3.2 per cent ($40.1m) whilst non-food rose 0.8 per cent ($22.2m), seasonally adjusted. 

In original terms, the proportion of online food retailing sales to total food retailing rose from 6.3 per cent to 6.5 per cent. The proportion for online non-food retailing sales to total non-food retailing was unchanged at 17.7 per cent.

In original terms, the proportion of online sales to total retailing rose from 11.4 per cent to 11.6 per cent. The proportion of online sales to total retailing was 11.0 per cent at the same time last year.

Quarterly retail turnover

Per capita retail volumes

Retail volumes on a per capita basis fell for the 8th straight quarter, down 0.9% (-$32.8) with retail spending on a per person basis down 3.0% (-$109.0) compared to this time last year.

Retail volumes per capita are down to its lowest level since the September quarter 2021 having peaked in the June quarter 2022. Retail volumes per capita are down 6.7% (-$256.0) since the June quarter 2022 peak.

Despite the eight consecutive quarterly falls, retail volumes per capita are up 2.3% ($80.8) compared to the December quarter 2019, the last quarter prior to the pandemic-period.

Scope

This publication presents estimates of the value of turnover of retail trade for Australian businesses. This includes all employing retail trade businesses who predominantly sell to households.

Retail Business Survey

Collection method

The survey includes about 700 large businesses and 2,700 smaller businesses selected by random sample.

The survey is conducted monthly primarily by telephone interview. A small number of questionnaires are mailed.

Concepts, sources and methods

Turnover includes:

  • retail sales
  • online sales
  • wholesale sales
  • takings from repairs, meals & hiring of goods
  • commissions from agency activity

Businesses are classified in terms of the retail industry group and subgroup it mainly operates in.

GST was included in turnover from 2000.
