The September 2024 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

  • Total dwellings approved rose 4.4%, to 14,842.
  • Private sector houses rose 2.2%, to 9,745, while private sector dwellings excluding houses rose 4.7%, to 4,653.
  • The value of total residential building was flat, at $8.04b.
  • The value of non-residential building rose 3.6%, to $5.57b.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for the number of dwellings approved rose 4.4%, after falling 3.9% in August. 

The trend estimate for total dwellings approved rose 1.2%, following a 1.4% August increase.

  1. Trend break added to 'Private sector houses' trend series for February 2021

The seasonally adjusted estimate for private sector house approvals rose 2.2%, after rising 2.3% in August. Private sector dwellings excluding houses approved rose 4.7%, following a 13.5% August decrease.

The trend estimate for private sector house approvals rose 1.1%, after a 1.1% August rise. Private sector dwellings excluding houses rose 0.8%, following a 1.4% August increase.
 

Seasonally adjusted summary, by state

Approvals for total dwellings increased in most states: Queensland (14.3%), Western Australia (11.4%), South Australia (8.2%), Victoria (6.0%), and Tasmania (0.5%) rose. New South Wales (-14.8%) fell in September.  

Approvals for private sector houses were mixed. South Australia (10.3%), Queensland (6.4%), and Western Australia (5.9%) rose. Victoria (-3.1%) and New South Wales (-1.1%) decreased, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Trend summary, by state

Approvals for total dwellings rose in Queensland (3.0%), Victoria (2.6%), Western Australia (2.3%), South Australia (1.5%), and Tasmania (1.5%). The trend estimate fell in the Australian Capital Territory (-21.8%), and New South Wales (-2.3%). The result in the Northern Territory was flat.

Approvals for private sector houses rose in all states: South Australia (2.7%), Western Australia (2.7%), Queensland (1.4%), New South Wales (0.2%), and Victoria (0.1%).

Value of building approved, seasonally adjusted

The value of total building approved rose 1.4% (to $13.61b), following a 1.1% rise in August. The value of total residential building was flat ($8.04b), comprised of a 0.2% increase in new residential building and a 1.3% fall in alterations and additions.

The value of non-residential building rose 3.6%, after an 11.3% August increase.

Value of building approved, trend

The trend estimate of the value of total building approved rose 0.3%, following a 0.8% rise in August. The value of total residential building rose 0.3%, comprised of a 0.4% increase in new residential building and a 0.1% rise in alterations and additions.

The value of non-residential building rose 0.2%, following a 0.8% August increase.

Statistics of building work approved are compiled from:

  • local government authorities and other principal certifying authorities
  • contracts authorised by government authorities

History of changes
