Building and construction

The April 2026 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

• Total dwellings approved fell 3.4%, to 16,710.
• Private sector houses fell 1.0%, to 10,088 and private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 3.6%, to 6,403.
• The value of total residential building fell 0.3% to $10.89b.
• The value of total non-residential building rose 29.4% to $7.75b.

In seasonally adjusted terms in the March quarter:

• Total construction work done rose 3.4% to $83.4b
• Building work done rose 0.6% to $44.7b
• Engineering work done rose 6.9% to $38.7b

The trend estimate for total construction work done rose 0.5% to $80.6b.

In seasonally adjusted terms:

• Total dwellings commenced rose 8.0% to 53,567 dwellings.
• New private sector houses commenced fell 0.9% to 28,469 dwellings.
• New private sector other residential commencements rose 23.4% to 23,849 dwellings.
• The value of total building work done rose 0.4% to $43.9b.

In the December quarter:

• Seasonally adjusted work done fell 1.8%.
• Seasonally adjusted work done for the private sector rose 0.3%.
• Value of work commenced increased 18.0% in original terms.
• Trend work done increased 0.4%.

• Australia’s dwelling stock was 10,879,349 dwellings at 30 June 2022.

• The net quarterly growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%), comprising 45,522 dwelling additions and 6,987 dwelling removals.

• The net quarterly growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively. 

• 80.6% of in-scope land parcels were zoned residential, with 600 - 800 square metres the most common size
• 59.5% of new dwellings in-scope were approved for land zoned residential, with 200 - 400 square metres the most common area per dwelling
