Building and construction

The January 2025 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

• Total dwellings approved rose 6.3%, to 16,579.
• Private sector houses rose 1.1%, to 9,042, while private sector dwellings excluding houses rose 12.7%, to 7,213.
• The value of total residential building rose 4.5%, to $9.04b.
• The value of non-residential building fell 20.7%, to $5.69b.

In seasonally adjusted terms in the December quarter:

• Total construction work done rose 0.5% to $73,936.9m
• Building work done fell 0.7% to $38,297.9m
• Engineering work done rose 1.8% to $35,639.0m

The trend estimate for total construction work done rose 1.2%.

In seasonally adjusted terms:

• The total number of dwelling units commenced rose 4.6% to 43,247 dwellings.
• New private sector house commencements rose 5.2% to 27,651 dwellings.
• New private sector other residential commencements rose 3.8% to 14,677 dwellings.
• The value of total building work done rose 0.3% to $38.5b.

In the September quarter:

• Seasonally adjusted work done rose 3.3%.
• Seasonally adjusted work done for the private sector rose 1.4%.
• Value of work commenced rose 13.6% in original terms.
• Trend work done rose 1.1%.

• Australia’s dwelling stock was 10,879,349 dwellings at 30 June 2022.

• The net quarterly growth was 38,535 dwellings (0.4%), comprising 45,522 dwelling additions and 6,987 dwelling removals.

• The net quarterly growth of houses, townhouses and apartments was 23,456 (0.3%), 6,713 (0.5%) and 8,361 (0.5%) respectively. 

• 80.6% of in-scope land parcels were zoned residential, with 600 - 800 square metres the most common size
• 59.5% of new dwellings in-scope were approved for land zoned residential, with 200 - 400 square metres the most common area per dwelling
