The seasonally adjusted estimate for the number of dwellings approved in Australia fell 0.7% in June. This follows a 11.2% rise in May.

The trend estimate for private sector house approvals fell 0.3% in June, this follows a 0.5% fall in May. Private sector dwellings excluding houses rose 1.0%, following a 0.1% rise in May.
The seasonally adjusted estimate for private sector house approvals rose 1.2% in June, to 9,834, following a 2.1% decline in May. Private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 5.7%, following a 34.6% rise in May.
Trend summary, by state
Across Australia, the number of dwelling approvals rose in Western Australia (5.5%), Tasmania (2.8%) and Queensland (2.6%). Dwelling approvals decreased in Northern Territory (-5.9%), Australian Capital Territory (-2.7%), Victoria (-1.7%), South Australia (-1.0%) and New South Wales (-0.8%), in trend terms.
Approvals for private sector houses rose in Western Australia (1.1%), South Australia (0.6%), Queensland (0.4%) and Victoria (0.2%), but fell in New South Wales (-1.2%), in trend terms.

By state, the number of dwelling approvals rose in Victoria (6.3%), Western Australia (1.7%), New South Wales (1.5%) and Tasmania (1.0%), in seasonally adjusted terms. Dwelling approvals decreased in South Australia (-10.1%) and Queensland (-2.0%).
Approvals for private sector houses rose in New South Wales (9.2%) and Victoria (4.2%). Declines were recorded in Queensland (-7.8%), Western Australia (-2.9%) and South Australia (-0.9%), in seasonally adjusted terms.

Value of building approved, trend
The trend estimate of the value of total building approved rose 0.4% in June. The value of total residential building increased by 1.2%, following a 1.3% rise in May. The rise in total residential building value was driven by a 1.3% rise in value of new residential building approved and a 0.5% increase in value of alterations and additions to existing residential buildings.
The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building fell 0.6%, following a 0.9% decrease in May.
Value of building approved, seasonally adjusted
The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building approved fell 4.7% in June. The value of total residential building fell by 3.7%, following a 6.7% rise in May. The decrease in total residential building value was comprised of a 3.9% fall in value of new residential building approved and a 2.2% decline in alterations and additions.
The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building fell 6.1%, following a 17.0% increase in May.

This publication provides the number of dwelling units and value of buildings approved released in Building Approvals, Australia on 2 August 2022.
Small area data cubes and CSV files will be made available in an “Additional Information” release five business days after the main publication. These will be for Statistical Areas Level 2 and Local Government Areas. Release dates are published under the “Forthcoming Issues” section of the publication and in the ABS Release Calendar.
A number of time series spreadsheets contain ‘np’ (not available for publication) annotations. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.
