Homicide and related offences
There were 377 victims of homicide and related offences recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 7 victims from the previous year.
Most victims of homicide and related offences were:
- male (69% or 259 victims)
- aged over 18 years (85% or 320 victims)
For homicide and related offences:
- nearly two-thirds (64%) occurred at a residential location (241 victims)
- more than half (59%) involved the use of a weapon (222 victims)
- more than a third (36%) were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (135 victims)
Sexual assault
The number of victims of sexual assault recorded by police increased by 3% (1,072 victims) from the previous year to 32,146 victims in 2022.
Accounting for population growth, the victimisation rate also increased between 2021 and 2022 from 121 to 124 victims per 100,000 persons. This was the highest recorded victimisation rate of sexual assault in the thirty year time series.

The victimisation rate for female victims (206 victims per 100,000 females) was more than 5 times that of male victims (39 victims per 100,000 males).
There were increases in five of the states and territories, with the largest increases in victim numbers in:
- New South Wales (up 927 victims or 8%)
- Queensland (up 540 victims or 8%)
While there were decreases in:
- Western Australia (down 406 victims or 11%)
- Victoria (down 97 victims or 2%)
- Australian Capital Territory (down 16 victims or 5%)
For victims of sexual assault:
- most (84%) were female (26,967 victims)
- the most common age at incident was between 10 and 17 years (42% or 13,439 victims)
Most sexual assaults:
- did not involve a weapon (94% or 30,185 victims)
- were reported within a year (69% or 22,225 victims)
- occurred at a residential location (65% or 20,886 victims)
A higher proportion of sexual assaults were reported to police within a year of the incident for female victims (71% or 19,230 victims) compared with male victims (58% or 2,917 victims).
More than a third (36%) of all sexual assaults were FDV related (11,676 victims).
Robbery
There were 9,551 victims of robbery recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 5% (415 victims) from 2021.
There were increases in robbery victims in all states and territories except for:
- Victoria (down 100 victims or 4%)
- South Australia (down 34 victims or 6%)
The largest increases in victim numbers were for:
- Queensland (up 276 victims or 11%)
- Northern Territory (up 85 victims or 38%)
For robberies:
- most (51%) were unarmed (4,851 victims)
- almost a third (31%) occurred on a street/footpath (2,962 victims)
Person victims of robbery were most commonly:
- male (75% or 6,285 victims)
- aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of report (30% or 2,516 victims)
Blackmail/extortion
There were 2,154 victims of blackmail/extortion recorded in Australia in 2022.
Male victims represented the majority (88%) of blackmail/extortion person victims.
The most common ages at the date of report for person victims were:
- between 18 and 24 years (44% or 923 victims)
- under 18 years (26% or 542 victims)
Unlawful entry with intent
There were 151,200 victims of unlawful entry with intent recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 9% (12,112 victims) from 2021. However, the number of victims of unlawful entry with intent remained lower than 2019 (173,347 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.
The largest increases in victim numbers occurred in:
- Queensland (up 8,368 victims or 22%)
- New South Wales (up 2,734 victims or 10%)
- Northern Territory (up 1,449 victims or 31%)
- Victoria (up 1,124 victims or 4%)
There were decreases for:
- South Australia (down 1,174 victims or 11%)
- Western Australia (down 349 victims or 2%)
- Australian Capital Territory (down 39 victims or 2%)
Most unlawful entry with intent:
- occurred at a residential location (70% or 105,568 victims)
- involved the taking of property (62% or 93,197 victims)
Motor vehicle theft
There were 55,037 victims of motor vehicle theft recorded by police in Australia in 2022, an increase of 11% (5,302 victims) from 2021.
Most states and territories increased in 2022 with the largest increases in:
- Queensland (up 3,685 victims or 25%)
- Victoria (up 785 victims or 7%)
The number of victims of motor vehicle theft decreased in the Australian Capital Territory (down 95 victims or 7%).
Most (57%) stolen vehicles were taken from an outbuilding/residential land (31,112 victims).
Other theft
There were 475,725 victims of other theft recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 8% (33,250 victims) from 2021. However, the number of victims of other theft remained lower than 2019 (569,243 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.
The largest contributors to the increase were:
- Queensland (up 14,015 victims or 13%)
- New South Wales (up 8,992 victims or 10%)
- Western Australia (up 5,995 victims or 9%)
The Australian Capital Territory was the only state or territory to have a decrease in victim numbers (down 593 victims or 8%).
The most common locations for other theft remained at:
- retail locations (42% or 197,970 victims)
- residential locations (29% or 136,091 victims)
Other thefts occurring at a retail location increased for the second straight year (by 28,358 victims or 17%). However, the number of victims of other theft remained lower for retail locations than 2019 (218,435 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.
