Australia

Homicide and related offences

There were 377 victims of homicide and related offences recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 7 victims from the previous year.

Most victims of homicide and related offences were:

  • male (69% or 259 victims)
  • aged over 18 years (85% or 320 victims)

For homicide and related offences:

  • nearly two-thirds (64%) occurred at a residential location (241 victims)
  • more than half (59%) involved the use of a weapon (222 victims)
  • more than a third (36%) were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (135 victims)

Sexual assault

The number of victims of sexual assault recorded by police increased by 3% (1,072 victims) from the previous year to 32,146 victims in 2022.

Accounting for population growth, the victimisation rate also increased between 2021 and 2022 from 121 to 124 victims per 100,000 persons. This was the highest recorded victimisation rate of sexual assault in the thirty year time series.

The victimisation rate for female victims (206 victims per 100,000 females) was more than 5 times that of male victims (39 victims per 100,000 males).

There were increases in five of the states and territories, with the largest increases in victim numbers in:

  • New South Wales (up 927 victims or 8%)
  • Queensland (up 540 victims or 8%)

While there were decreases in:

  • Western Australia (down 406 victims or 11%)
  • Victoria (down 97 victims or 2%)
  • Australian Capital Territory (down 16 victims or 5%)

For victims of sexual assault:

  • most (84%) were female (26,967 victims)
  • the most common age at incident was between 10 and 17 years (42% or 13,439 victims)

Most sexual assaults:

  • did not involve a weapon (94% or 30,185 victims)
  • were reported within a year (69% or 22,225 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (65% or 20,886 victims)

A higher proportion of sexual assaults were reported to police within a year of the incident for female victims (71% or 19,230 victims) compared with male victims (58% or 2,917 victims).

More than a third (36%) of all sexual assaults were FDV related (11,676 victims).

Robbery

There were 9,551 victims of robbery  recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 5% (415 victims) from 2021.

There were increases in robbery victims in all states and territories except for:

  • Victoria (down 100 victims or 4%)
  • South Australia (down 34 victims or 6%)

The largest increases in victim numbers were for:

  • Queensland (up 276 victims or 11%)
  • Northern Territory (up 85 victims or 38%)

For robberies:

  • most (51%) were unarmed (4,851 victims)
  • almost a third (31%) occurred on a street/footpath (2,962 victims)

Person victims of robbery were most commonly:

  • male (75% or 6,285 victims)
  • aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of report (30% or 2,516 victims)

Blackmail/extortion

There were 2,154 victims of blackmail/extortion recorded in Australia in 2022.

Male victims represented the majority (88%) of blackmail/extortion person victims.

The most common ages at the date of report for person victims were:

  • between 18 and 24 years (44% or 923 victims)
  • under 18 years (26% or 542 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

There were 151,200 victims of unlawful entry with intent recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 9% (12,112 victims) from 2021. However, the number of victims of unlawful entry with intent remained lower than 2019 (173,347 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.

The largest increases in victim numbers occurred in:

  • Queensland (up 8,368 victims or 22%)
  • New South Wales (up 2,734 victims or 10%)
  • Northern Territory (up 1,449 victims or 31%)
  • Victoria (up 1,124 victims or 4%)

There were decreases for:

  • South Australia (down 1,174 victims or 11%)
  • Western Australia (down 349 victims or 2%)
  • Australian Capital Territory (down 39 victims or 2%)

Most unlawful entry with intent:

  • occurred at a residential location (70% or 105,568 victims)
  • involved the taking of property (62% or 93,197 victims)

Motor vehicle theft

There were 55,037 victims of motor vehicle theft recorded by police in Australia in 2022, an increase of 11% (5,302 victims) from 2021.

Most states and territories increased in 2022 with the largest increases in:

  • Queensland (up 3,685 victims or 25%)
  • Victoria (up 785 victims or 7%)

The number of victims of motor vehicle theft decreased in the Australian Capital Territory (down 95 victims or 7%).

Most (57%) stolen vehicles were taken from an outbuilding/residential land (31,112 victims).

Other theft

There were 475,725 victims of other theft recorded in Australia in 2022, an increase of 8% (33,250 victims) from 2021. However, the number of victims of other theft remained lower than 2019 (569,243 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.

The largest contributors to the increase were:

  • Queensland (up 14,015 victims or 13%)
  • New South Wales (up 8,992 victims or 10%)
  • Western Australia (up 5,995 victims or 9%)

The Australian Capital Territory was the only state or territory to have a decrease in victim numbers (down 593 victims or 8%).

The most common locations for other theft remained at:

  • retail locations (42% or 197,970 victims)
  • residential locations (29% or 136,091 victims)

Other thefts occurring at a retail location increased for the second straight year (by 28,358 victims or 17%). However, the number of victims of other theft remained lower for retail locations than 2019 (218,435 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.

New South Wales

Homicide and related offences

There were 79 victims of homicide and related offences recorded in New South Wales in 2022.

For victims of homicide and related offences:

  • the majority (84%) were male (66 victims)
  • more than two-thirds (68%) knew the offender (54 victims)
  • nearly half (46%) were aged between 35 and 54 years (36 victims)

Most homicide and related offences:

  • occurred at a residential location (67% or 53 victims)
  • involved the use of a weapon (54% or 43 victims), most commonly a knife (34% or 27 victims)

More than a third (37%) were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (29 victims).

Assault

The number of victims of assault increased by 7% (4,804 victims) from the previous year to 69,493 victims in 2022.

The victimisation rate also increased from 790 to 852 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

Most assault victims:

  • were male (52% or 36,379 victims)
  • knew the offender (68% or 47,278 victims)

Almost a quarter (23%) of victims were aged between 25 and 34 years at the date of report (16,212 victims).

Most assaults:

  • did not involve a weapon (97% or 67,112 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (56% or 38,980 victims)

Nearly half (47%) of all assaults were FDV related (32,893 victims).

Sexual assault

There were 12,412 victims of sexual assault recorded in New South Wales in 2022, an increase of 8% (927 victims) from 2021. This was the eleventh annual increase in the number of victims of sexual assault.

The victimisation rate also increased from 140 to 152 victims per 100,000 persons, the highest rate recorded in the thirty year time series.

Most sexual assault victims:

  • were female (79% or 9,765 victims)
  • were aged under 18 at the date of incident (68% or 8,459 victims)
  • knew the offender (83% or 10,339 victims)

For sexual assaults:

  • almost 100% did not involve the use of a weapon (12,389 victims)
  • most (61%) occurred at a residential location (7,608 victims)
  • nearly two-fifths (38%) were FDV related (4,678 victims)

Robbery

There were 2,087 victims of robbery in 2022, an increase of 3% (56 victims) from 2021.

The number of victims of armed robbery increased by 8% (68 victims) from the previous year to 931 victims in 2022, while unarmed robbery remained relatively stable.

For robberies:

  • more than half (56%) did not involve the use of a weapon (1,164 victims)
  • over a third (34%) occurred on a street/footpath (714 victims)

For person victims of robbery:

  • the majority (78%) were male (1,477 victims)
  • nearly a quarter (23%) were aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of report (436 victims)

Blackmail/extortion

There were 845 victims of blackmail/extortion recorded in New South Wales in 2022.

The majority (92%) of person victims were male (773 victims).

Most (88%) person victims were aged under 34 at the date of report (739 victims) with:

  • nearly two-thirds (64%) aged between 18 and 34 years (540 victims)
  • almost a quarter (24%) aged under 18 years (199 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

There were 30,934 victims of unlawful entry with intent recorded in New South Wales in 2022, an increase of 10% (2,734 victims) from the previous year. However, the number of victims of unlawful entry with intent remained lower than 2019 (34,564 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.

Most unlawful entry with intent:

  • occurred at a residential location (74% or 22,827 victims)
  • involved the taking of property (61% or 18,710 victims)

Motor vehicle theft

The number of victims of motor vehicle theft in 2022 remained relatively stable, decreasing by less than 1% (8 victims) from 2021 to 9,909 victims.

More than half (56%) of stolen motor vehicles were taken from an outbuilding/residential land (5,554 victims).

Other theft

There were 103,714 victims of other theft recorded in 2022, an increase of 10% (8,992 victims) from the previous year. This increase followed the lowest number of victims recorded for this offence since the time series began in 1995 (94,722 victims in 2021).

Other theft most commonly occurred at a retail location (40% or 41,586 victims).

Victoria

Homicide and related offences

The number of victims of homicide and related offences recorded in Victoria in 2022 did not change from the previous year, with 84 victims in both 2021 and 2022.

For victims of homicide and related offences:

  • most (71%) were male (60 victims)
  • the most common age was 55 years and over (30% or 25 victims)

Most homicide and related offences:

  • occurred at a residential location (73% or 61 victims)
  • involved the use of a weapon (51% or 43 victims)

A third (33%) of homicide and related offences were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (28 victims).

Sexual assault

There were 6,067 victims of sexual assault recorded in Victoria in 2022, a decrease of 2% (97 victims) from the previous year.

The victimisation rate also slightly decreased from 93 to 92 victims per 100,000 persons in the same period.

Most victims of sexual assault:

  • were female (88% or 5,355 victims)
  • knew the offender (72% or 4,358 victims)

More than a third (37%) of victims were aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of incident (2,257 victims).

Most sexual assaults:

  • did not involve the use of a weapon (98% or 5,926 victims)
  • were reported to police within one year (70% or 4,234 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (68% or 4,101 victims)

Two in five (40%) sexual assaults were FDV related (2,422 victims).

Robbery

There were 2,281 victims of robbery recorded in Victoria in 2022, a decrease of 4% (100 victims) from 2021. This was the lowest recorded number since 1996.

Person victims of robbery were most commonly:

  • male (82% or 1,778 victims)
  • aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of report (38% or 825 victims)

More than half of robberies:

  • involved the use of a weapon (58% or 1,311 victims)
  • occurred at a community location (52% or 1,181 victims), most commonly on a street/ footpath (31% or 708 victims)

Blackmail/extortion

The number of victims of blackmail/extortion recorded in Victoria more than doubled from 2021, increasing by 333 victims to 562 victims in 2022.

Most blackmail/extortion person victims:

  • were male (88% or 463 victims)
  • were aged between 18 and 34 years at the date of report (59% or 310 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

In 2022, there were 30,840 victims of unlawful entry with intent recorded in Victoria, an increase of 4% (1,124 victims) from the previous year.

Most unlawful entry with intent:

  • occurred at a residential location (67% or 20,527 victims)
  • involved the taking of property (63% or 19,489 victims)

Motor vehicle theft

There were 12,917 victims of motor vehicle theft recorded in Victoria in 2022, an increase of 7% (785 victims) from 2021.

Half (50%) of all stolen motor vehicles were taken from an outbuilding/residential land (6,427 victims).

Other theft

The number of victims of other theft increased by 1% (1,194 victims) from 2021, to 107,970 victims in 2022.

Almost a third (30%) of other theft offences occurred at a retail location (31,799 victims).

Queensland

Homicide and related offences

There were 110 victims of homicide and related offences recorded in Queensland in 2022, an increase of 28 victims from 2021.

Most homicide and related offences:

  • occurred at a residential location (68% or 75 victims)
  • involved the use of a weapon (56% or 61 victims)

Over half (56% or 61 victims) of victims of homicide and related offences were male.

Assault

Queensland assault data for 2022 is included in this publication as a result of changes to recording practices, which now align with nationally agreed standards. Data for 2010–2021 did not follow these standards so are not published. Family and domestic violence (FDV) data, as well as relationship of offender to victim data, for Queensland assault are not yet available for publication.

In 2022, police recorded 52,375 victims of assault in Queensland. The victimisation rate was 983 victims per 100,000 persons.

Most victims of assault:

  • were aged 18 years or over at the date of report (87% or 45,760 victims)
  • were female (57% or 29,709 victims)

Most assaults:

  • did not involve a weapon (80% or 42,083 victims)
  • occurred at a dwelling (59% or 31,044 victims)

Sexual assault

There were 7,431 victims of sexual assault recorded in Queensland, an increase of 8% (540 victims) from the previous year. The victimisation rate also increased from 132 to 140 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

For victims of sexual assault:

  • the majority (86%) were female (6,415 victims)
  • most (65%) knew the offender (4,804 victims)
  • more than half (56%) were aged under 18 years at the date of incident (4,132 victims)

Most sexual assaults:

  • did not involve use of a weapon (93% or 6,880 victims)
  • were reported within a year (70% or 5,163 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (66% or 4,904 victims)

More than a third (35%) of sexual assaults were FDV related (2,592 victims).

Robbery

In 2022, victims of robbery increased by 11% (276 victims) to 2,759 victims.

Around two-thirds of person victims of robbery:

  • were aged 18 years and over at the date of report (67% or 1,518 victims)
  • were male (66% or 1,494 victims)

For robberies:

  • over half were unarmed (54% or 1,482 victims)
  • nearly a third occurred on a street/footpath (31% or 845 victims)
  • almost a quarter involved a knife (23% or 641 victims)

Blackmail/extortion

In 2022, victims of blackmail/extortion increased by 67% (62 victims) to 155 victims.

For person victims of blackmail/extortion:

  • nearly three-quarters of victims were aged 18 years and over at the date of report (74% or 113 victims)
  • most victims were male (70% or 107 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

There were 47,277 victims of unlawful entry with intent in 2022, an increase of 22% (8,368 victims) from the previous year.

Most unlawful entry with intent:

  • occurred at a dwelling (69% or 32,430 victims)
  • involved the taking of property (59% or 27,874 victims)

Motor vehicle theft

There were 18,195 victims of motor vehicle theft in 2022, an increase of 25% (3,685 victims) from 2021.

Almost two-thirds of stolen motor vehicles were taken from an outbuilding/residential land(65% or 11,779 victims).

Other theft

The number of victims of other theft in Queensland increased by 13% (14,015 victims) to 126,394 victims.

More than half of other thefts occurred at a retail location (52% or 65,279 victims).

South Australia

Homicide and related offences

There were 29 victims of homicide and related offences recorded in South Australia in 2022, a decrease of 6 victims from the previous year.

For victims of homicide and related offences:

  • most were male (69% or 20 victims)
  • over three-quarters (76%) knew the offender (22 victims)
  • most (55%) involved the use of a weapon (16 victims)
  • nearly half (48%) occurred on a street/footpath (14 victims)

More than half (52%) were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (15 victims).

Assault

There were 19,741 victims of assault recorded in South Australia in 2022, an increase of 9% (1,567 victims) from 2021.

The victimisation rate also increased from 1,025 to 1,084 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

Most assault victims:

  • were female (54% or 10,704 victims)
  • knew the offender (73% or 14,476 victims)

For assaults:

  • three-quarters (75%) did not involve the use of a weapon (14,767 victims)
  • more than half (57%) occurred at a residential location (11,235 victims)
  • almost half (49%) were FDV related (9,588 victims)

A quarter of all assault victims were aged between 25 and 34 years at the date of report (4,972 victims).

Sexual assault

There were 1,816 victims of sexual assault recorded in South Australia in 2022, an increase of 2% (33 victims) from the previous year.

Accounting for population change over this period, the victimisation rate slightly decreased from 101 to 100 victims per 100,000 persons.

For sexual assault victims:

  • most (90%) were female (1,625 victims)
  • the majority (82%) knew the offender (1,481 victims)
  • the most common age at incident was between 10 and 17 years (35% or 635 victims)

Between 2021 and 2022, sexual assaults reported to police:

  • within a year increased by 6% (79 victims) to 1,395 victims
  • one year and over decreased by 10% (45 victims) to 421 victims

Most (66%) sexual assaults occurred at a residential location (1,193 victims) and did not involve the use of a weapon (92% or 1,671 victims).

More than a third (35%) of sexual assaults were FDV related (643 victims).

Robbery

In 2022, there were 496 victims of robbery recorded in South Australia, a 6% (34 victims) decrease from 2021.

More than half (56%) of all robberies involved the use of a weapon (277 victims), most commonly a knife (35% or 171 victims).

Of person victims:

  • most were male (80% or 345 victims)
  • almost a quarter (23%) were aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of report (99 victims)

Blackmail/extortion

The number of victims of blackmail/extortion in South Australia increased from 109 to 345 victims in 2022.

The majority (90%) of person victims were male (308 victims).

Most victims (85%) were aged under 35 years at the date of report (291 victims), with:

  • almost three-fifths (59%) aged between 18 and 34 years (203 victims)
  • more than a quarter (26%) aged under 18 years (88 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

There were 9,543 victims of unlawful entry with intent in South Australia in 2022, a decrease of 11% (1,174 victims) from 2021. This was the lowest number of victims recorded for this offence since the time series began in 1993.

Most unlawful entry with intent:

  • involved the taking of property (64% or 6,125 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (74% or 7,044 victims)

Motor vehicle theft

There were 3,609 victims of motor vehicle theft in South Australia in 2022, an increase of 6% (197 victims) from the previous year.

Nearly half (48%) of all stolen motor vehicles were taken from an outbuilding or residential land (1,736 victims).                                                                                                                                                                                          

Other theft

The number of victims of other theft recorded in South Australia increased by 6% (2,323 victims) from 2021, to 44,228 victims in 2022.

Half (50%) of all other thefts occurred at a retail location (21,887 victims).

Western Australia

Homicide and related offences

There were 49 victims of homicide and related offences in Western Australia in 2022.

For victims of homicide and related offences:

  • most were male (63% or 31 victims)
  • a quarter (25%) were aged 55 years or older, the most common age group
  • over a third (37%) were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (18 victims)

Around half of homicide and related offences:

  • occurred at a residential location (53% or 26 victims)
  • involved the use of a weapon (49% or 24 victims)

Assault

In 2022, the number of victims of assault in Western Australia increased by 7% (2,566 victims) to 38,743 victims, the highest number in the thirty year time series. The assault victimisation rate also increased from 1,349 in 2021 to 1,390 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

For victims of assault:

  • around three in five (61%) were female (23,714 victims)
  • more than a quarter (26%) were aged between 25 and 34 years at the date of report (10,171)

Most assaults:

  • were FDV related (64% or 24,896 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (65% or 25,352 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (80% or 30,971 victims)

Sexual assault

The number of victims of sexual assault decreased by 11% (406 victims) to 3,158 victims in 2022. The victimisation rate also decreased from the highest in the thirty year time series at 133 victims in 2021 to 113 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

For victims of sexual assault:

  • most were female (86% or 2,720 victims)
  • a higher proportion of males (80% or 312 victims) than females (59% or 1,592 victims) were aged under 18 years at the date of incident
  • over a quarter (27%) of all sexual assaults were FDV related (864 victims)

A greater proportion of sexual assaults for male victims (21% or 83 victims) were reported after one year compared with female victims (16% or 445 victims).

Most sexual assaults:

  • occurred at a residential location (74% or 2,344 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (67% or 2,128 victims)

Robbery

There were 1,236 victims of robbery in 2022, an increase of 4% (45 victims) from the previous year.

For person victims of robbery:

  • almost three-quarters were male (72% or 803 victims)
  • the most common age group was between 10 and 17 years at the date of report (30% or 340 victims)

Almost half of all robberies:

  • did not involve the use of a weapon (49% or 606 victims)
  • occurred at a community location (44% or 549 victims), most commonly a street/footpath (27% or 328 victims).

Retail comprised over a quarter of all robbery locations (26% or 326 victims).

Blackmail/extortion

The number of victims of blackmail/extortion increased from 70 to 215 victims in 2022. This was the highest number recorded in the thirty year time series.

For blackmail/extortion victims:

  • most were male (79% or 170 victims)
  • almost half (47%) were aged under 18 years at the date of report (100 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

In 2022, the number of victims of unlawful entry with intent in Western Australia decreased by 2% (349 victims) from the previous year to 22,059 victims.

Most unlawful entry with intent:

  • occurred at a residential location (71% or 15,641 victims)
  • involved the taking of property (71% or 15,594 victims)

Motor vehicle theft

There were 6,718 victims of motor vehicle theft recorded in 2022, an increase of 2% (141 victims) from 2021.

Three-fifths (60%) of stolen motor vehicles were taken from an outbuilding/residential land (4,050 victims). Community locations comprised over one-fifth (22%) of motor vehicle theft locations (1,501 victims).

Other theft

The number of victims of other theft recorded in 2022 increased by 9% (5,995 victims) from the previous year to 71,852 victims. However, the number of victims of other theft remained lower than 2019 (89,353 victims), prior to when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.

Retail was the most common location for other theft (42% or 30,440 victims), followed by a residential location (31% or 22,136 victims).

Tasmania

Homicide and related offences

There were 13 victims of homicide and related offences recorded in Tasmania in 2022.

The majority (62%) of homicide and related offences were attempted murder (8 victims).

Victims of homicide and related offences were:

  • mostly male (85% or 11 victims)
  • most commonly aged between 18 and 34 years (46% or 6 victims)

For homicide and related offences:

  • over three-fifths (62%) occurred at a dwelling (8 victims)
  • most involved the use of a weapon (92% or 12 victims)

Assault

The number of victims of assault in Tasmania in 2022 increased by 6% (204 victims) from the previous year to 3,777 victims.

However, after accounting for population growth, the victimisation rate remained relatively stable increasing from 660 in 2021 to 661 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

For victims of assault:

  • most (52%) were female (1,946 victims)
  • more than two-thirds (69%) knew the offender (2,620 victims)
  • a quarter (25%) were aged between 25 and 34 years at the date of report (959 victims)

Most assaults:

  • occurred at a residential location (54% or 2,024 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (82% or 3,083 victims)

More than two-fifths (45%) of assaults were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (1,712 victims).

Sexual assault

There were 560 victims of sexual assault recorded in Tasmania in 2022, an increase of 14% (67 victims) from 2021.

Most sexual assault victims:

  • were female (87% or 486 victims)
  • knew the offender (88% or 493 victims)

A higher proportion of male victims (85% or 60 victims) were aged under 18 years at the date of incident compared with female victims (49% or 240 victims).

Most sexual assaults:

  • occurred at a residential location (74% or 413 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (96% or 537 victims)

More than two-fifths (44%) of sexual assaults were FDV related (247 victims).

Robbery

There were 194 victims of robbery in Tasmania in 2022, an increase of 73 victims from the previous year.

For person victims of robbery:

  • most were male (70% or 80 victims)
  • more than a third (35%) knew the offender (40 victims)
  • around a fifth (21%) were aged between 35 and 44 years at the date of report (24 victims)

Most robberies:

  • occurred at a retail location (43% or 84 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (51% or 98 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

The number of victims of unlawful entry with intent remained relatively stable from 2,488 victims in 2021 to 2,491 victims in 2022.

Most unlawful entry with intent:

  • involved the taking of property (78% or 1,941 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (62% or 1,549 victims)

Motor vehicle theft

There were 1,501 victims of motor vehicle theft in Tasmania in 2022, an increase of 25% (296 victims) from the previous year. This was the highest recorded number of victims since 2011.

Most (81%) vehicles were taken from either:

  • an outbuilding or residential land(55% or 829 victims)
  • a street or footpath (26% or 384 victims)

Other theft

The number of victims of other theft recorded in Tasmania in 2022 increased by 17% (1,122 victims) from the previous year to 7,727 victims.

More than half (54%) of all other theft offences occurred at a retail location (4,187 victims).

Northern Territory

Homicide and related offences

(There were 15 victims of homicide and related offences recorded in the Northern Territory in 2022.

For victims of homicide and related offences:

  • the majority were aged 18 years and over (87% or 13 victims)
  • most victims were male (60% or 9 victims)

For homicides and related offences:

  • around two-thirds occurred at a community location (67% or 10 victims)
  • over half did not involve the use of a weapon (53% or 8 victims)
  • over half were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (53% or 8 victims)

Assault

There were 10,427 victims of assault in 2022, an increase of 15% (1,373 victims) from 2021.

Most victims of assault:

  • were aged 18 years and over at the date of report (91% or 9,467 victims)
  • knew the offender (77% or 8,060 victims)
  • were female (66% or 6,846 victims)

For assaults:

  • around two in three were FDV related (65% or 6,796 victims)
  • nearly half occurred at a community location (48% or 5,019 victims)

Sexual assault

There were 362 victims of sexual assault in 2022, an increase of 2% (7 victims) from the previous year.

The victimisation rate remained stable at 144 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

Most victims of sexual assault:

  • were female (90% or 324 victims)
  • were aged 18 years and over at the date of incident (64% or 232 victims)
  • knew the offender (56% or 201 victims)

Most sexual assaults:

  • were reported within a year of the incident (93% or 335 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (91% or 331 victims)

Two in five sexual assaults occurred at a community location (40% or 143 victims).

Robbery

There were 308 victims of robbery in the Northern Territory in 2022, an increase of 38% (85 victims) from the previous year. Over half were armed robberies (59% or 182 victims).

Most person victims of robbery:

  • were aged 18 years and over at the date of report (88% or 232 victims)
  • were male (64% or 170 victims)

Almost half of robberies occurred at a community location (48% or 147 victims).

Unlawful entry with intent

There were 6,194 victims of unlawful entry with intent in 2022, an increase of 31% (1,449 victims) from 2021. Around two in three did not involve the taking of property (63% or 3,870 victims).

Motor vehicle theft

The number of victims of motor vehicle theft increased by 41% (293 victims) from the previous year to 1,001 victims in 2022. More than two in five occurred at a community location (45% or 448 victims).

Other theft

In 2022, the number of victims of other theft increased by 3% (207 victims) from the previous year to 6,710 victims. The most common location for other theft was retail (18% or 1,198 victims).

Australian Capital Territory

Homicide and related offences

There were 9 victims of homicide and related offences in the Australian Capital Territory in 2022. Most offences did not involve the use of a weapon (78% or 7 victims) and occurred at a community location (67% or 6 victims).

Assault

In 2022, the number of victims of assault increased by 6% (146 victims) from the previous year to 2,460 victims. This was the highest number in the thirty year time series. The assault victimisation rate increased slightly from 536 in 2021 to 539 victims per 100,000 persons in 2022.

For victims of assault:

  • just under a quarter (23%) were aged between 25 and 34 years at the date of report (557 victims)
  • there were slightly more male (50% or 1,226 victims) than female (48% or 1,184) victims
  • two in five (40%) of the assaults were family and domestic violence (FDV) related (977 victims)
  • a higher proportion of females knew the offender (79% or 932 victims) than males (48% or 590 victims)

Assaults most commonly:

  • occurred at a residential location (44% or 1,077 victims) or on a street/footpath (31% or 755 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (89% or 2,200 victims)

Sexual assault

There were 325 victims of sexual assault recorded in the Australian Capital Territory in 2022, a decrease of 5% (16 victims) from the previous year.

For victims of sexual assault:

  • most were female (87% or 281 victims)
  • most knew the offender (69% or 225 victims)
  • almost two fifths were aged under 18 years at the date of incident (39% or 125 victims)
  • a higher proportion of sexual assaults for female victims (81% or 227 victims) were reported to police within a year of the incident compared with male victims (65% or 31 victims)
  • over a third (34%) of the sexual assaults were FDV related (111 victims)

Most sexual assaults:

  • occurred at a residential location (62% or 200 victims)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (98% or 318 victims)

Robbery

There were 187 victims of robbery in the Australian Capital Territory in 2022, an increase of 16 victims (9%) from the previous year. Over half (61%) were unarmed robberies (114 victims).

For robberies:

  • the majority (79%) of person victims were male (132 victims)
  • almost half (49%) of the robberies occurred on a street/footpath (92 victims)

Unlawful entry with intent

In 2022, the number of victims of unlawful entry with intent decreased by 2% (39 victims) from the previous year to 1,872 victims. This was the lowest number recorded in the thirty year time series.

Most unlawful entries with intent occurred at a residential (54% or 1,011 victims) or retail location (27% or 505 victims).

Motor vehicle theft

There were 1,181 victims of motor vehicle theft recorded in 2022, a decrease of 7% (95 victims) from the previous year.

Most motor vehicle thefts occurred at a community location (51% or 604 victims), with almost a third of motor vehicle thefts occurring on a street/footpath (30% or 354 victims).

Other theft

There were 7,140 victims of other theft in 2022, a decrease of 8% (593 victims) from the previous year.

Just over two-fifths (42%) of other theft offences occurred at a community location (3,013 victims).

Victims of family and domestic violence related offences

Homicide and related offences

There were 135 victims of family and domestic violence (FDV) related homicides recorded nationally in 2022, an increase of 27% (29 victims) from the previous year.

FDV related homicides comprised more than a third (36%) of all recorded homicides.

The majority of FDV related homicide victims were female (53% or 71 victims).

The most common age group of FDV related homicide victims was between 35 and 54 years (30% or 40 victims).

For FDV related homicides:

  • the majority (84%) occurred at a residential location (113 victims)
  • more than half (53%) were murders (71 victims)
  • around half (48%) involved a weapon (65 victims)

Assault

FDV related assault data is not published for Victoria or Queensland. As a result, data is not available at the national level and is presented for selected states and territories only.

At least two in five assaults recorded by selected state and territory police were FDV related, ranging from 40% in the Australian Capital Territory to 65% in the Northern Territory.

The number of victims of FDV related assault increased in all states and territories in 2022, ranging from a 1% increase in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory to a 19% increase in the Northern Territory.

For selected states and territories, victims of FDV related assault were most commonly:

  • female (65–79%)
  • assaulted by an intimate partner (53–84%)

For most states and territories, the most common age group among victims of FDV related assault at the date of report was between 25 and 34 years (23–31%). In the Australian Capital Territory, the most common age group was between 35 and 44 years (24%).

FDV related assaults most commonly:

  • occurred at a residential location (42–87%)
  • did not involve the use of a weapon (57–97%)

Sexual assault

There were 11,676 victims of FDV related sexual assault recorded nationally in 2022, an increase of 3% (314 victims) from the previous year.

From 2021:

  • the number of female victims recorded increased (up 3% or 319 victims)
  • the number of male victims recorded decreased (down 2% or 19 victims)

More than a third (36%) of all sexual assaults recorded in 2022 were FDV related.

Victims of FDV related sexual assault were most commonly:

  • female (89% or 10,382 victims)
  • aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of incident (35% or 4,049 victims)

Most FDV related sexual assaults:

  • did not involve the use of a weapon (94% or 11,025 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (89% or 10,371 victims)
  • were reported within a year (57% or 6,679 victims)

The offender was most commonly recorded as:

  • other family member in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, ranging from 48% in Victoria to 55% in New South Wales.
  • intimate partner in the remaining states and territories, ranging from 55% in the Northern Territory to 61% in the Australian Capital Territory

Kidnapping/abduction

There were 154 FDV related victims of kidnapping/abduction in 2022. About a third (30%) of all kidnappings/abductions were FDV related.

Most FDV related victims of kidnapping/abduction were:

  • female (87% or 134 victims)
  • aged 18 years and over at the date of report (77% or 118 victims)

Most FDV related kidnappings/abductions:

  • did not involve the use of a weapon (88% or 135 victims)
  • occurred at a residential location (76% or 117 victims)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of crime

Data about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of crime is presented for New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of crime assault data for Queensland is presented for the first time in 2022.

Based on an ABS assessment, Indigenous status data for other states and territories is not of sufficient quality and/or does not meet ABS standards for national reporting in 2022.

A change in NSW police recording practices has resulted in improvements to the quality of this data for 2022. Due to this change, this data cannot be compared with previous reference periods.

Assault

The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of assault recorded in 2022 was:

  • 12,170 victims in Queensland
  • 7,770 victims in New South Wales
  • 7,627 victims in the Northern Territory
  • 3,106 victims in South Australia

Most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of assault were:

  • female (61–75%)
  • aged 18 years and over at the date of report (80–92%)

Most assaults for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims were recorded as family and domestic violence (FDV) related (65–80%).

Almost a quarter to a third of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of assault were aged between 25 and 34 years at the date of report (24–33%).

The most common location for assault was:

  • residential in Queensland (70%), New South Wales (66%) and South Australia (61%)
  • community in the Northern Territory (47%)

Sexual assault

The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of sexual assault recorded in 2022 was:

  • 1,116 victims in New South Wales
  • 923 victims in Queensland
  • 171 victims in the Northern Territory
  • 99 victims in South Australia

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of sexual assault:

  • most were female (70–93%)
  • less than a third to almost half were aged between 10 and 17 years at the date of report (30–45%)
  • most offences were reported to police within a year (61–95%)
  • approximately one third of offenders were family members (30–36%)

Less than half of sexual assaults for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims were recorded as FDV related (40–48%).

The most common location for sexual assault was:

  • residential in Queensland (70%), South Australia (78%) and New South Wales (69%)
  • community in the Northern Territory (38%)

Robbery

The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of robbery recorded in 2022 was:

  • 179 victims in Queensland
  • 103 victims in New South Wales
  • 37 victims in Northern Territory
  • 8 victims in South Australia

Most robbery offences occurred at a community location (50–68%).
