The January 2023 seasonally adjusted estimate: 

  • Rose 1.9% month-on-month.
  • Rose 7.5% compared with January 2022.

Analysis by industry

Food retailing

Food retailing rose 0.3% ($36.7m) in January, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Household goods retailing

Household goods retailing rose 1.1% ($60.7m) in January, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing

Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing rose 6.5% ($181.0m) in January, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Department stores

Department stores rose 8.8% ($150.8m) in January, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Other retailing

Other retailing rose 2.9% ($152.3m) in January, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services rose 1.2% ($61.6m) in January, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Online retailing

Total online retailing sales were $3,860.7m in January 2023, in seasonally adjusted terms. Seasonally adjusted online sales rose 0.6 per cent ($21.5m), following a fall of 4.7 per cent (-$190.7m) in December 2022. Seasonally adjusted through-the-year sales are up 1.6 per cent ($62.0m).

Original sales in January 2023 fell by 22.6 per cent (-$1,035.2m).

In January 2023, food online sales were $1,060.7m, and non-food online sales were $2,800.1m, in seasonally adjusted terms. Non-food sales rose 3.0 per cent ($82.4m), while food sales fell 5.4 per cent (-$60.9m).

In original terms, the proportion of online non-food retailing sales to total non-food retailing rose from 15.7 per cent to 16.7 per cent. The proportion for online food retailing sales to total food retailing remained relatively unchanged (5.2 per cent). Proportion of online sales are down for both categories and overall compared to same time last year. In January 2022 the non-food proportion was 17.5 per cent and the food proportion was 5.8 per cent.

In original terms, the proportion of online sales to total retailing fell from 10.4 per cent in December 2022 to 10.3 per cent in January 2023. In January 2022 this proportion was 11.1 per cent.

07/03/2023 - As advertised in the main release of this publication on 28 February 2023, the time series spreadsheets for tables 5 through to 23 are now available under the Data Downloads section. This includes:

  • January monthly results for State by Industry Subgroup, Completely Enumerated (large) and Sample (small) businesses, and Online Retail Turnover. 
  • December quarter 2022 results, available in tables 5 through to 10. These results have been published previously. 
  • December quarter 2022 results for consumer sales of energy retailing and communications services.

In addition, an online retailing section has been added to this publication, which shows the most-up-to-date online retail sales.
