Key statistics

In seasonally adjusted terms for the December 2022 quarter:

  • Red meat production decreased 2.2%
  • Chicken meat production decreased 2.3%

Livestock products (seasonally adjusted)

Cattle

  • Cattle slaughtered in the December 2022 quarter decreased 1.1% to 1.5 million.
  • Beef production in the December 2022 quarter decreased 1.0% to 470,957 tonnes.   

 

Sheep

  • Sheep slaughtered in the December 2022 quarter increased 3.5% to 1.7 million.
  • Mutton production in the December 2022 quarter decreased 1.6% to 44,317 tonnes.

 

Lambs

  • Lambs slaughtered in the December 2022 quarter decreased 9.5% to 5.4 million.
  • Lamb meat production in the December 2022 quarter decreased 8.7% to 132,481 tonnes.

 

Pigs

  • Pigs slaughtered in the December 2022 quarter increased 0.3% to 1.4 million.
  • Pig meat production in the December 2022 quarter increased 1.2% to 110,961 tonnes.

 

Chickens

  • Chickens slaughtered in the December 2022 quarter decreased 2.7% to 173.3 million. 
  • Chicken meat production in the December 2022 quarter decreased 2.3% to 336,317 tonnes.

Gross value of livestock (original)

  • The gross value of cattle and calves slaughtered decreased 8.6% to $3.6 billion.
  • The gross value of sheep and lambs slaughtered decreased 3.4% to $1.2 billion. 
  • The gross value of pigs slaughtered decreased 3.1% to $401 million. 
  • The gross value of poultry slaughtered increased 3.7% to $923 million.
