Key statistics

In March quarter 2023, there were 727,200 tourism jobs: This was:

  • 43,700 (6.4%) more jobs than December quarter 2022
  • 177,200 (32.2%) more jobs than March quarter 2022
  • 30,300 (-4.0%) less jobs than December quarter 2019, prior to COVID-19 pandemic
  • 1 in 21 (4.8%) filled jobs in the economy

During this quarter, industries with the largest quarterly changes were:

  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: increase of 20,400 jobs (8.5%)
  • retail trade: increase of 7,800 (7.0%)
  • education and training: increase of 6,500 jobs (21.7%)

Comparing March quarter 2022 with March quarter 2023, industries with the largest changes were:

  • cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: increase of 69,400 jobs (36.2%)
  • retail trade: increase of 34,400 (40.3%)
  • clubs, pubs, taverns and bars: increase of 17,200 jobs (42.7%)
  • education and training: increase of 16,200 jobs (79.8%)

Full-time and part-time employment

  • jobs filled by males increased for both full-time (5.8%) and part-time (4.7%)
  • jobs filled by females increased for both full-time (10.5%) and part-time jobs (4.6%)

From March quarter 2022 to March quarter 2023:

  • jobs filled by males increased for both full-time (32.6%) and part-time (35.8%)
  • jobs filled by females increased for both full-time (45.2%) and part-time jobs (21.3%)

Changes in this issue

Data previously published for rail transport is now included in air, water and other transport.

The term ‘status in employment’ has been changed to full-time and part-time employment to be consistent with Labour Force, Australia

The 2021-22 issue of Australian National Accounts: Tourism Satellite Account was released on 8 December 2022. While the employment estimates are based on the same source, differences will occur due to the timing of updates to the source data.
