Assets of securitisers

At 31 December 2019, total assets of Australian securitisers were $156.5b, up $9.5b (6.4%) on 30 September 2019.

During the December quarter 2019 the rise in total assets was primarily due to an increase in residential mortgages, up $7.6b (6.6%), non-residential mortgage loans, up $0.8b (22.1%), other loans, up $0.6b (3.7%) and cash and deposits, up $0.3b (6.7%).

Liabilities of securitisers

At 31 December 2019, total liabilities of Australian securitisers were $156.5b, up $9.5b (6.4%) on 30 September 2019. The increase in total liabilities was due to an increase in long term asset backed securities issued in Australia, up $9.0b (6.8%), and loans and placements, up $0.7b (17.8%). This increase was partially offset by a decrease in asset-backed securities issued overseas, down $0.3b (8.2%).

In the graph above, the change in level of asset backed securities issued in Australia for the quarters ended March to December 2018 inclusive is not available for publication. However, the change is included in totals where applicable, unless otherwise indicated.

Asset backed securities issued overseas as a proportion of total liabilities decreased to 2.2%, down 0.4 percentage points on the September quarter 2019 proportion of 2.6%. Asset backed securities issued in Australia as a proportion of total liabilities increased to 93.2%, up 0.1 percentage point on the September quarter 2019 proportion of 93.1%.
