The National Health Measures Study (the study) is a component of the wider Intergenerational Health and Mental Health Study (IHMHS) funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. The study involved testing of blood and urine (e.g. tests for cholesterol, kidney function, liver function).
Data for the study was collected in two surveys conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the National Health Measures Survey (NHMS) and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Measures Survey (NATSIHMS). The results of each survey will be published separately.
The NHMS was conducted between January 2022 and April 2024. To participate in the NHMS, a respondent first had to be selected in either the 2022 National Health Survey or the 2023 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey.
The NATSIHMS was conducted between August 2023 and April 2024. To participate in the NATSIHMS, a respondent first had to be selected in either the 2022-2023 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey or the 2023 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutritional and Physical Activity Survey.
Only survey respondents aged 5 years or older were eligible to donate biomedical samples. Informed consent was sought from the participant or guardian prior to them attending a collection point and providing blood and/or urine samples. Participants aged 5 - 11 years were asked to provide a urine sample only. Participants aged 12 years and over were asked to provide a blood and/or urine sample. Participation in the study was voluntary and respondents were able to withdraw at any time.
