Purpose of the survey
The Survey of Foreign Currency Exposure (SFCE) is run every four years and collects information about foreign currency exposures and risk mitigation strategies implemented to minimise these exposures. The SFCE measures:
- Financial assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies
- Forecasted trade flows denominated in foreign currencies
- Formal and informal (natural) hedging on the above
- Notional value of derivative contracts
- Hedging policies.
The results from this survey will be published at the end of October under the release "Foreign Currency Exposure, Australia, March Quarter 2022". The 2017 results are available on the ABS website, Foreign Currency Exposure, Australia, March Quarter 2017. The foreign currency exposure statistics are drawn upon by a wide variety of individuals and organisations in both the public and private sector, with major users including:
- Reserve Bank of Australia
- The ABS' National Accounts
- International Monetary Fund
- Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development
- International rating agencies
- Commonwealth Department of Treasury and the State Treasuries
- State and Commonwealth Government departments and agencies- Industry organisations and associations
- Market analysts and economists.
