Have your say on updates to ABS macroeconomic statistics

Media Statement
Released
10/12/2024

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) invites Australians to have their say on the international standards underpinning key economic statistics. Today, you can have your say on how the ABS should prioritise making these changes.

Things that the ABS is seeking your thoughts on include:

  • Supplementary tables to measure sustainable finance
  • Digital supply-use tables to better analyse the impacts of digitalisation
  • Supplementary tables on the characteristics of importers and exporters
  • Thematic accounts on the informal economy, and
  • Supplementary tables on renewable energy.

The ABS last updated its National Accounts and Balance of Payments and International Investment statistics in 2009. Both the Australian and global economies have changed significantly since then, including, rapid developments in digitalisation and globalisation, and a greater focus on wellbeing, and the environment.

More detailed information on the proposed changes are available on the ABS Consultation Hub.

The ABS will hold a public webinar on this consultation on Tuesday 21 January 2025 at 2:00pm AEDT (Sydney/Canberra/Melbourne time). For further details on the public webinar, please contact the National Accounts Transformation team via na.transformation@abs.gov.au.

The consultation will close on 31 January 2025.
