AGE

The median age of offenders in each state and territory was:
    • 24 years in the Australian Capital Territory;
    • 25 years in Queensland;
    • 26 years in New South Wales and Tasmania;
    • 27 years in Victoria;
    • 28 years in Western Australia;
    • 29 years in South Australia; and
    • 30 years in the Northern Territory.

In 2012-13, offender rates were highest in the 15-19 year age group in all states and territories except South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, where offender rates were highest in the 20-24 year age group. Offenders aged 65 years and over had the lowest offender rate, ranging from 654 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 65 years and over in the Northern Territory to 47 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 65 years and over in the Australian Capital Territory. (Table 11)
