The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today released the second publication of a project aimed at improving the evidence base for family, domestic and sexual violence. Bridging the data gaps is part of a broader project being conducted by the ABS in partnership with the Department of Social Services (DSS) as part of the Commonwealth’s National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children.
Bridging the data gaps identifies the unanswered questions in this field, highlighting the critical gaps in existing data and the actions required to redress the information shortfall.
Family, domestic and sexual violence comes at a considerable economic and social cost to the nation. Identifying that cost is essential to progress a coordinated and strategic response.
ABS Director, Brad Petry, said "The detailed analysis of the existing data environment across different sectors and jurisdictions reveals opportunities where resource investment may better inform the community about family, domestic and sexual violence."
'This publication will guide policy makers, data custodians and service providers about the strategies and actions required to address the data gaps. The availability and quality of data is a significant challenge in measuring family, domestic and sexual violence. Bridging the data gaps provides a focus for future action, whether at the service, administrative, or policy level.' said Mr Petry.
