General Enquiry Form Collection Notice

This Collection Notice explains the collection of your personal information by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) through the General Enquiry form (the form). The purpose of the form aims to provide you with a way of contacting the ABS with general enquiries.

Purpose and collection of personal information

In order to contact you about your enquiry we will collect the following personal information:

  • your email address
  • your phone number (optional).

Additional information that may be collected by the free text box with details of the enquiry may be personal or sensitive information, including but not limited to:

  • Opinions or beliefs of preferences, activities, political or religious
  • Gender or sexual orientation
  • Cultural status
  • Disability and health information

Where there is personal or sensitive information provided by you but irrelevant to your enquiry, the ABS will only collect and use the relevant solicited information for the business function of responding to the enquiry or referred to another ABS business unit. Any other personal or sensitive information that is provided, but not required, in relation to your enquiry will be managed in accordance with the ABS policies and procedures and relevant legislation.

Storage and security of personal and sensitive information

Personal and/or sensitive information is stored in the secure ABS environment and managed in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988, its Australian Privacy Principles, other relevant legislation and the requirements of the ABS' legislative framework.

Use and disclosure of personal and sensitive information

The ABS will only use your email address or phone number (if provided) to contact you about your enquiry. Other personal and/or sensitive information provided by you may be used in accordance with the ABS processes, procedures and relevant legislation to manage your enquiry. The ABS will not share your details with any other parties outside the ABS, unless required by Australian Law. Please see the ABS Privacy Policy for more information.

Retention of Personal Information

The retention and deletion of your personal and/or sensitive information will be managed by the relevant ABS business unit managing the enquiry in accordance with the relevant legislation.

Privacy Complaints

The ABS Privacy Policy for Managing and Operating Our Business has information about how you can make a complaint if you feel the ABS has not adequately protected your privacy. The Policy describes how the ABS will respond to your complaint, and what you can do if you are not satisfied with our response.
