QUALITY DECLARATION - SUMMARY
INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENT
For information on the institutional environment of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), including the legislative obligations of the ABS, financing and governance arrangements, and mechanisms for scrutiny of ABS operations, please see ABS Institutional Environment.
The key source of data used in this publication is produced by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) and published in the Australian Energy Account. For information about ABARES please see About ABARES. The other prominent data source used to construct this publication is the Energy, Water and Environment Survey (EWES) produced by the ABS. For information about this survey please see EWES Explanatory Notes.
RELEVANCE
Energy Account, Australia 2008-09 (ABS cat. no. 4604.0) presents physical supply and use data by energy product and industry for 8 years to 2008-09. The physical supply and use data allows analysts to better understand energy use patterns in Australia. Energy Account, Australia 2008-09 also analyses energy intensity trends for some major industries over 30 years to 2008-09.
TIMELINESS
Energy Account, Australia 2008-09 is released within 2 years of the end of the reference period and contains the latest available ABARES data for physical supply and use. Previously energy accounts have been released on an infrequent basis. In the future the ABS intends to produce annual energy accounts, with releases moving to within 18 months of the end of the reference period.
ACCURACY
Physical data in Energy Account, Australia 2008-09 is based on ABARES' Australian Energy Statistics. These data have been adjusted to better accord with an industry-based ANZSIC view using data from the ABS Economic Activity Survey, Survey of Motor Vehicle Use and Energy, Water and Environment Survey.
For details about the collections underpinning Australian Energy Statistics, please see the Fuel and Electricity Survey page on the ABARE website.
COHERENCE
Data for total physical flows of energy are coherent with data published in the first two editions of Energy Account, Australia. The allocation of energy conversions by industry in this edition is not completely coherent with previous editions.
As data presented in the Energy Account are presented using the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) it allows data in the Energy Account to be related to other economic statistics that use this classification, most notably the Australian System of National Accounts.
