CLASSIFICATIONS AND SCOPE

The scope of the Energy Account is determined by the range of products (goods and services) defined as 'energy products'. With minor exceptions, the product classification used in this publication for physical measures of energy products follows that used in ABARES' Australian Energy Statistics. The categories of energy product used in Australian Energy Statistics are:

  • Black coal
  • Brown coal
  • Brown coal briquettes
  • Metallurgical coke
  • Coal by-products (including blast furnace gas, coal tar, benzene/toluene/xylene feedstock and coke oven gas)
  • Natural gas
  • Crude oil and other refinery feedstock
  • Propane, butane, LPG
  • Refined products (including petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, heating oil, fuel oil, refinery fuel and naphtha)
  • Liquid / gas biofuels
  • Biomass wood
  • Biomass bagasse
  • Electricity
    • solar/wind electricity
    • hydro-electricity
    • other (i.e. that generated from fossil fuels)
  • Solar hotwater
  • Uranium

The Energy Account excludes solvents, lubricants, grease and bitumen from the grouping 'refined products'.

INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION

Industry classifications used in this publication for data from 2007-08 onwards broadly follow the 2006 edition of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industry Classification (ANZSIC). However, supply/use data prior to 2007-08 are classified according to the previous (1993) edition of ANZSIC.

These classifications differ from those used in ABARES' Australian Energy Statistics to present supply and use of energy products by Australian industry. The table below shows the industries used in Table A of Australian Energy Statistics alongside corresponding groups of ANZSIC industries.

Where the account draws on data from ABARES' Australian Energy Statistics data from the Energy, Water and Environment Management Survey (EWES) 2008-09 were used to assist in reallocating the supply and use of energy products between industries. In particular, the use of transport fuels by industries and the movement of waste from Commercial and Services to Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services were accounted for.

Concordance between industry classification used in Australian Energy Statistics (ABARES) and ANZSIC 2006 is provided below.
