Key statistics

In December quarter 2024, there were 713,500 tourism jobs. This was:

  • 23,700 (3.4%) more jobs than September quarter 2024
  • 17,500 (2.5%) more jobs than December quarter 2023
  • 1 in 23 (4.4%) filled jobs in the economy.

In December quarter 2024, 9 of the 12 tourism industries recorded a rise in jobs. The largest increases were in:

  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: up 9,100 (4.5%)
  • Accommodation: up 7,800 (6.6%)
  • Retail trade: up 3,400 (2.8%)
  • Sports and recreation services: up 2,100 (5.9%).

The increase in jobs from December quarter 2023 to December quarter 2024 was due to rise in 6 of the 12 tourism industries. The largest increases were in:

  • Education and training: up 14,400 (37.1%)
  • Accommodation: up 12,500 (11.0%).

These were partially offset by decreases in:

  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: down 7,100 (-3.3%)
  • Air, water and other passenger transport: down 3,500 (-9.8%).

The increase in December quarter 2024 was driven by jobs held by females with part-time jobs up 15,800 and full-time jobs up 13,600. Similarly, jobs held by females drove the increase from December quarter 2023 to December quarter 2024, with part-time jobs up 7,700 and full-time jobs up 7,500.
