Key statistics

In March quarter 2024, there were 644,600 tourism jobs. This was:

  • 6,600 (-1.0%) less jobs than December quarter 2023
  • 10,600 (-1.6%) less jobs than March quarter 2023
  • 53,800 (-7.7%) less jobs than March quarter 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 1 in 24 (4.1%) filled jobs in the economy

  • Education and training: increase of 8,200 jobs (14.9%)
  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: decrease of 7,400 jobs (-3.6%)
  • Clubs, pubs, taverns and bars: decrease of 3,500 jobs (-7.7%)

Comparing March quarter 2023 with March quarter 2024, industries with the largest changes were:

  • Education and training: increase of 29,600 jobs (87.6%)
  • Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services: decrease of 26,900 jobs (-11.9%)
  • Accommodation: decrease of 15,400 jobs (-17.0%)
