Agricultural Commodity Census/Survey
|

Information is collected on the agricultural activity of businesses with an Estimated Value of Agricultural Operations (EVAO) above a specified level ($5,000 since 1993/94 Census). Data are available for all ASGC regions, by industry, by EVAO, type of commodity and specified size ranges (e.g. herd sizes).

Major commodity categories are:
- area of holding
- pastures
- broadacre cropping
- vegetables
- fruit
- vineyards
- artificial fertilisers and soil conditioners used
- irrigation
- livestock
|
|
Additional information can be obtained on certain commodities which are listed below:

- apples and pears
- beekeeping
- cotton
- hops and tobacco
- nurseries, cut flowers and cultivated turf
- potatoes
- vineyards
|
|
|
|
|
|
A census of agriculture has been conducted every year from 1840.
As from 1997/98, the census will be conducted every five years with a survey conducted in the intervening years.

The ABS can make available certain data which are not contained in publications. A wide variety of unpublished agricultural data are available. Examples include:
- all commodities data by individual shire
- a mapping service using the ABS Geocode program which allows you to specify your area of interest, independent of shire boundaries
- size tables showing area of holdings by area of wheat
