Building Commencements Collection

Provides information collected from local and other government authorities relating to the number of new residential building jobs that commenced during the reference period. All building jobs need to have a permit issued by, or be approved by, a Commonwealth, State or Local Government Authority and are regarded as being commenced once the first inspection has been made by the appropriate authority.

Data items collected include:
- number of dwelling units commenced
- value of new residential buildings commenced (houses and other residential)
- material of outer wall
|

Monthly data were published on a quarterly basis from September 1980 to December 1990 and then published monthly until September 1996. Prior to this, building activity information was obtained from the Building Operations Census.

The ABS can make available certain data which are not contained in publications. Unpublished building commencements data are available as either a standing order (tailored tables delivered each month) or as ad hoc requests. Data can be transferred to various spreadsheet packages such as Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel. For more information, please contact our Information Services team.
