Census of Population and Housing

The Census provides statistics on key characteristics of people and housing in Australia on Census night. Information is collected from all Australian households through self-completed questionnaires.

Data items include:

First conducted in 1911 by the Commonwealth of Australia at irregular intervals. Since 1961, every five years.

CDATA96: A user friendly CD-ROM product containing a large volume of tabulated Census data, digital boundaries and base maps. You can manipulate the data to produce tables, maps and graphs.

Community Profiles: Comprehensive tables containing characteristics of persons, families and dwellings, for all standard geographic areas.

Census of Population and Housing data on the ABS Web Site. Provides selected statistics:
• from the Community Profiles;
• for Family and Labour Force Characteristics;
• for Urban Centres and Localities
• in the form of State Summaries (State commentary and basic local government area counts)

  Maps showing SLA and CD boundaries are available on request. Digitised Census boundaries can be purchased for use with mapping software enabling you to (for example) form the basis for your own aggregated regions; or to map data for a particular area of interest.
