Information is collected from private sector companies with licences to explore for minerals. These companies range from the largest national companies to small exploration ventures each having a minimum exploration expenditure of $20,000 per annum. The information collected is used by government and industry for policy formulation and planning.

- metres drilled
- location
- type of mineral sought
- information on sales
- joint venture arrangements

The ABS can make available certain data which are not contained in publications. Other State level commodity data are available on request.
