Building Activity Survey

Provides information relating to all stages (commenced, under construction, completed) of residential and non-residential building activity undertaken in the reference quarter. The statistics are compiled from information collected from builders as well as other organisations and individuals engaged in building activity. The Building Approvals Collection provides the framework for this survey which consists of two components:
1. A sample survey of private sector building jobs involving new house construction or alterations and additions valued at $10,000 or more.
2. A complete listing of non-private sector new residential buildings, all alterations and additions to non-private sector residential buildings with an approval value of $10,000 or more and all non-residential building jobs with an approval value of $50,000 or more.

Note: Each selected building job is included in the Building Activity collection until the job is completed.

Data items available include:
• value of work done
• value of project
• date of commencement
• date of completion
• number and value of building
• ownership (private or public)
• floor area (square metres) of building
• class of building (e.g. hotels, shops, factories etc.)
• stage of construction

From September 1980. Prior to this, building activity information was obtained from the Building Operations Census.

The ABS can make available certain data which are not contained in publications. Unpublished building activity data are available as either a standing order (tailored tables delivered each quarter/year) or as ad hoc requests. Data can be transferred to various spreadsheet packages such as Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel. For more information, please contact our Information Services team.
