I started working as a graduate in the WA office of the ABS in 1994, and I've been here ever since! I felt very lucky to secure a job in the WA office because I did not have to move to Canberra, as most graduates do. Right from the beginning, I found that the people in the WA office were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and inclusive, and over time, many have become very good friends.
I have been fortunate to be involved in a wide range of projects during my time in the ABS, from developing, conducting and analysing the results of a household expenditure survey on the Cocos (Keeling) and Christmas Islands, through to managing field operations during the 2001 Census. Even as a junior member of staff, I was given challenging roles and interesting projects to work on, and my views and opinions were always sought after and respected.
The ABS is a rewarding place to work, offering a variety of work, an extensive training program and plenty of on-the-job training and support. I've found the organisation to have a great attitude to balancing work and family responsibilities, allowing me to take a year off work when my daughter was born, and to then return to work on a part time basis.
