The Australian Bureau of Statistics engages non-ongoing employees to fill short and medium-term vacancies. These positions are office based and may be filled at the APS 1-6 level or Executive 1 and 2 levels. Below is a snapshot of the skills & experience identified in areas across the ABS:

To assist the ABS to achieve its mission and to help shape the future of the ABS, we require employees with skills in Finance, Management, Administration and Human Resources. Operations areas engage with other ABS business areas to support and grow the organisation ensuring there are systems and processes in place to support its employees, manage its resources, meet its commitments and plan at a corporate level. To work in this area you will enjoy striving for excellence with your strong interpersonal skills and proven client focus. You will have strong communication skills, be flexible, adaptable and innovative. You will be mindful of relevant legislation and be capable of working with key stakeholders to understand their information needs.
Information & Communication Technology
The Technology Services Division (TSD) provides leadership in process innovation and provides the ABS with world class, reliable, functional and value for money Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services and facilities. As part of a team, you will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive Information Technology service to the ABS, encompassing mid-range and small scale computing facilities and associated communications networks. You will be involved in challenging work that will require you to analyse and disseminate information in a timely manner. Data collected and held by the ABS is confidential therefore an ability to work in a fast paced sensitive manner is crucial. Project management and process improvements skills are also important aspects for working in the ICT area.

To be eligible for non-ongoing employment, there are a number of requirements that you must meet.
Ø Australian Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the ABS, you must be an Australian citizen.
Ø Redundancy Benefits - If you have received a redundancy benefit from an APS agency or from the Australian Parliamentary Service, you are not normally considered for re-employment prior to the expiry of the redundancy benefit period. However a redundancy benefit recipient may be engaged as a non-ongoing (non-SES employee) for a period of less than six months subject to Australian Statistician approval. Ø Pre-employment Check - The ABS must verify you are of good health and character through a Health & Character Clearance. This involves:
· Completing an online Medical Self-assessment and National Police Check and
· Confirming the details given in your employment application (including employment history, employment references, educational qualifications, and professional memberships).
If the ABS receives unsatisfactory reports or delays on any of the above eligibility checks, you may be assessed as unsuitable for employment. If you have been offered a position, the offer may be withdrawn.
The ABS Non-ongoing (Temporary) Employment Register is readvertised every four months. Your application will remain current during these four months. At the end of each four month period you will need to reapply to the new register if you still wish to be considered for employment opportunities. The current register, including the closing date, is listed under Current Vacancies on the Careers page.
This Register is intended for non-ongoing opportunities only and applicants should have no expectations in gaining ongoing employment. Applicants should also be aware this is a register only and that you will only be contacted regarding your application if a vacancy arises that matches your experience/skills.
