The ABS maintains a Non-ongoing (Temporary) Employment Register where you can register your interest in obtaining non-ongoing employment. The ABS engages Non-ongoing employees to fill short and medium-term vacancies (less than 12 months in duration). These positions are primarily office based and may be filled at the APS 1-6 level or Executive 1 and 2 levels. Important Facts about the ABS Non-Ongoing Employment Register
By applying to the Register you are indicating an Expression of Interest in working for the ABS, only. You are not actually applying for a position. You will only be contacted regarding your application if a vacancy arises that matches your experience/skills. The number, location and type of work on offer can vary significantly throughout from month to month. For this reason the Non-ongoing Register is refreshed on a regular basis. To remain in consideration you will need to submit a new application each time the Non-ongoing Register is refreshed. The current version of the register, including the closing date, is listed under Current Vacancies on the Careers page.
The majority of positions that arise are at the APS 1 - APS 5 level and require skills or experience in service delivery including general administration, customer service, data entry or telephone interviewing. This type of work is best suited to someone who:
- Works well in a team environment;
- Is willing to undertake repetitive work, follow strict procedures and work to tight deadlines;
- Is competent using a range of software applications eg Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes;
- Feels comfortable telephoning households or businesses to collect and enter survey data or sourcing information on the ABS website to answer enquiries from the public.
- If required, be prepared to work on a rotating roster (within ABS business hours) or work on short notice.
From time to time Non-ongoing opportunities arise in the following fields You will be required to demonstrate that you have the appropriate skills or previous experience to be considered for these types of roles. These roles are generally at the APS4 - APS6 or Executive Level 1 or 2.
Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
Service Delivery roles - previous experience in Lotus Notes/Domino Administration or Windows Server Administration or working in an ICT Service Delivery would be advantageous,
Business Analysts, Applications Development, Information Management, Data Mining, Enterprise Architecture, Process and Application Integration, or Website design and Development.
Examples of roles include Executive Assistants, Rehabilitation Case Managers, Corporate Communication or Financial Managers familiar with public sector legislation and practices.
If applying for a role in Survey Methodology you must be able to demonstrate expertise in methods relating to the design, collection, compilation, analysis, dissemination and management of statistical data.
A role in a Statistical Area will require demonstrated relevant expertise in statistical analysis or interpretation or associated skills such as geography, or demography.
To be eligible for non-ongoing employment, there are a number of requirements that you must meet.
- Australian Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the ABS, you must be an Australian citizen. If you are a permanent resident or if you are in the process of applying for citizenship you are ineligible to apply until your citizenship is conferred at a citizenship ceremony. If you are found suitable for a position you will be required to show proof of citizenship prior to commencing work.
- Redundancy Benefits - If you have received a redundancy benefit from an APS agency or from the Australian Parliamentary Service, you are not normally considered for re-employment prior to the expiry of the redundancy benefit period. - Pre-employment Check - The ABS will undertake a Health and Character checks prior to you commencing work to ensure you are of sound character and of a suitable level of fitness to be able to perform the duties of the role you are being considered for. This may involve;
- Completing an online Medical Self-assessment or undergoing a medical examination depending on the nature of the role;
- Confirming the details given in your employment application (including employment history, employment references, educational qualifications, and professional memberships);
- Completing an application to be lodged with the Australian Federal Police for a National Police Check;
- Undertaking character checks with referee/s.
