Who we are
The Economic and Environment Statistics Group provides a range of statistics that are used by governments and others to formulate and assess economic policies (at both macro and micro level), to evaluate economic performance, to understand the drivers of economic growth, and to understand the structure of, and emerging trends in, the Australian economy (including industry, environment, agriculture and goods and services). Through the provision of statistical outputs, information papers, seminars, and other means, we aim to foster a greater understanding in the community of concepts, methods and uses of economic and environment information.
We are responsible for the following programs:
- The National Accounts program provides quarterly and annual data about the level of economic activity and the structure of the Australian and state economies within a coherent system of concepts and classifications. The key outputs are measures of GDP, consumption and investment flows, household income and saving and productivity.
- The Prices program is responsible for compiling the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the House Price Index (HPI), the Labour Price Index (LPI) which is an annual series comprising a quarterly Wage Price Index (WPI) and an annual non-wage price index, and a range of Producer and International Trade Price Indexes (PPIs and ITPIs respectively).
- The International Accounts and Financial Statistics program provides statistics on Australia’s balance of payments, international investment position, globalisation, and Australia’s exports and imports of goods and services. It also provides statistics on financial assets, liabilities, borrowing and lending of financial institutions, and on the financial operations and balance sheets of government.

- The Integration Innovation Statistics program is responsible for the conduct of several surveys related to business characteristics (including technology usage and innovation activity); the information and communication technology industry; and Research and Development activity.
- The Economic Analysis and Reporting program publishes market sector and industry level estimates of productivity and conducts ongoing research into the measurement and interpretation of productivity estimates. The program covers a wide variety of macroeconomic research projects that are designed to improve ABS economic statistics.
- The Industry Statistics program compiles information about industry structure and performance, and industry indicators and output measures, used as input to the compilation of macro economic statistics and for analysis and monitoring of the economy, including statistics on agriculture.
- The Environment Statistics program focused on the development and production of a suite of Environmental-Economic accounts and other environmental indicators that complements and articulates with the biophysical data being produced by other agencies as part of the National Plan for Environmental Information.
- The Geography program involves the coordination of spatially enabled and integrated statistical products and services, including ABS statistical geography, to facilitate the provision of spatial data at multiple and flexible spatial dimensions, particularly for regional areas.
