Working at the Tasmania Regional Office

Located at the mouth of the Derwent River in the south of the state is Tasmania's capital city, Hobart. Overlooked by majestic Mount Wellington, this picturesque city is home to around 200, 000 people. Hobart's average maximum temperature is 17.6 C and average minimum temperature is 9.2 C, allowing ample opportunity to appreciate the city's natural beauty, culture and heritage. At its greatest length, Tasmania spans some 296 kilometres from north to south and 315 kilometres from the east to west. So whether it's the World Heritage listed areas and unique wildlife, or wineries and wilderness retreats you're interested in, nothing is too far away.

Living and working in Hobart

World-famous local produce, beer and wine tempts many Hobartians out to the various restaurants, bars and cafes situated in and around the city. With a range of live music venues, art galleries, specialty shops and boutiques, the Salamanca Market, and a series of festivals and events held throughout the year, there is always something to do and see. If you're after something a little more adventurous bushwalking, fishing, sailing, surfing, scuba diving, rock-climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, or skiing are just some of the many activities on offer around Tasmania's capital.

Of course, Hobartians have ready access to all the facilities and services one would expect of a major city. Health, housing, transport, and education needs are catered for by a combination of private and public providers.

The ABS Hobart Office is located just two blocks from the city centre at 200 Collins Street. A Regional Director oversees approximately 150 staff who work on a variety of activities.

Career Prospects and Promotional Opportunities

The ABS Hobart Office seeks staff who have a range of research, analytical, problem-solving and statistical skills. Positions in the office are predominantly administrative, operational, support and research roles in either the client services and/or statistical collection areas. Administrative work may entail responding to queries or budget planning; operational work could include processing survey results or resolving anomalies in data; while a support role could include technical support, the coordination of training, or the promotion of events; and a research project could involve examining client needs, investigating available data, or ways to improve business processes.

Within the office, staff are encouraged to move between branches when positions become available in order to broaden their work experience. The availability of opportunities are largely determined by staff retention, the size of the office, and the types of services provided. Staff can gain experience by undertaking a role at a higher level, providing them with the opportunity to learn new skills, explore different avenues of work, and increase their promotional prospects. Higher duties are offered on both short and long term bases. Staff can also apply for positions in the other state and territory offices.

Social Activities

The ABS Hobart Office organises a variety of social activities and events so staff can get to know each other better and socialise in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. These activities usually take place either as part of immediate workgroup celebrations or as part of office-wide activities organised by the social club.

Workgroup milestones and significant achievements are regularly celebrated at lunches and morning/afternoon teas while office-wide activities are also organised to give an opportunity for staff from different sections to interact where they normally wouldn't.

The Social Club organises annual events such as the Christmas dinner, Quiz Night, golf day, along with a variety of other activities throughout the year. In the past these have included lunchtime BBQs, 8-ball tournaments, restaurant nights, lawn bowls, and other unique events. The Social Club also hosts an annual photography competition and regular raffles. All staff at the Hobart office are members of the Social Club. There are no fees as we raise money by selling cheap movie tickets, snacks and drinks including good quality coffee from our automatic coffee machine (which is widely appreciated).
