Purpose
To assess the rate, type and impact of innovation in Australian industries.

Description
The ABS has conducted Innovation surveys in respect of 1993-94 and 1996-97. The surveys are based on a stratified random sample of businesses from the ABS Register of Businesses. The 1993-94 sample comprised approximately 5,000 businesses in the manufacturing industry and 6,700 in various non-manufacturing industries. The 1996-97 survey was restricted to the manufacturing industry and comprised approximately 6,000 businesses.

Data are collected by mail questionnaire.

Data Detail
For manufacturing industries:

  • Rate of innovation;
  • Impact of innovation;
  • Qualitative aspects of innovative businesses;
  • Expenditure on innovation; and
  • Characteristics of main innovations.

    For other industries:
  • Level of innovation only.

    Data are available for the transport and storage industry.

    Geographic Coverage
    Australia.

    Frequency of Data Availability
    Data release is irregular. Two surveys have been conducted in respect of 1993-94 and 1996-97.

    Historical Data
    The results from the first survey were released in 1994 and from the second survey, in 1998.
