ABS eCensus wins Award for Excellence in eGovernment

Australia's first eCensus, run by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) last year, has won a prestigious e-Government Award for Excellence.

The 2007 e-Government Award recognises the most outstanding successful project of an Australian government agency in their delivery of e-government services to business, citizens and the community.

The Hon. Gary Nairn, MP, Special Minister for State, presented the award to the ABS eCensus team on 2 May at a CeBit Conference dinner in Sydney.

The Australian Statistician, Mr Brian Pink, said the ABS was proud of the success of the eCensus project.

"For the first time in history, Australians were given the opportunity to complete their Census forms online and many took advantage of this convenient and efficient way to provide their 2006 Census details," he said.

"In time the eCensus will lead to faster processing of Census information, giving communities and decision makers access to results earlier."

First results from the 2006 Census are due to be released on 27 June 2007.
