NSW accounts for almost all of the Australian rice crop. Rice production is undertaken in three areas: the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, the Coleambally Irrigation Area and the Murray Valley Irrigation Area. These three areas are in the Murrumbidgee and Murray Statistical Divisions (SDs).

In 2006-07, drought had a significant impact as evidenced by production falling to 161,000 tonnes.
