2016 Census data release schedule finalised

3 March 2017

The release and topic schedule for data from the 2016 Census of Population and Housing has been finalised.

On Tuesday, 11 April 2017, just eight months after Census night, a preview of the 2016 results will be published on the ABS website giving insight into what makes the ‘typical’ Australian in 2016 at the national and state/territory level.

These insights will set the scene for the official release of 2016 Census data on Tuesday, 27 June 2017. The comprehensive dataset to be released in June will include national, State/Territory and capital city data for selected key person, family and dwelling characteristics, including age, sex, religion, language and income.

Community level Census data, including information on small population groups and for small geographic areas such as suburbs and Local Government Areas will also be available.

These statistics will be released through QuickStats, Community Profiles, analytical articles and infographs in June 2017. TableBuilder and Datapacks will be available from July 2017.

Rebased Estimated Resident Population (ERP) and data quality indicators from the Post Enumeration Survey (PES) will also be released on 27 June 2017, providing a comprehensive package of Census and related information.

Detailed Census data on employment, qualifications and population mobility (journey to work and previous address) will be released in October 2017.

The Independent Assurance Panel, supported by the MacGibbon Review, is undertaking an independent review of 2016 Census data to provide extra assurance and ensure transparency of the Census data quality assurance process. Its report to the Australian Statistician will also be released to the public on 27 June 2017.

The release schedule ensures the Independent Assurance Panel has adequate time to review the Census results and provide their report before Census data is released to the community.

From July 2017, Census data seminars will be held in major locations across Australia to provide information on Census data, training in Census products, and assist with data requests. To register interest in attending these roadshows, please enter your details here.
