2014 Census field test

22 July 2014

The ABS conducts the Census of Population and Housing every five years. It is the largest statistical collection undertaken by the ABS and one of the most important.

The next Census is scheduled for August 2016.

The ABS is conducting a Census field test in the following selected areas of South Australia and Western Australia to trial new delivery and collection procedures in the lead up to 2016:
  • Southern Adelaide and Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, and
  • South Perth metro area, Mount Barker and Albany regions in Western Australia.

Approximately 100,000 households across both states have been selected to participate.

The test areas have been selected because they are representative of large areas of the rest of the country and they meet specific objectives that need to be tested for the 2016 Census.

Participating household are asked to complete and submit their Census form online on Census night, Tuesday, 5 August 2014.

Once the test is completed, the procedures are evaluated and outcomes are reviewed and applied to future tests and the Census. This ensures the ABS can run a more efficient Census and provide better information for future decisions.
