Census job opportunities in Western and South Australia

24 March 2014

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has announced the creation of over 430 short-term jobs in regional Australia, to support a Census field test in the lead up to the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.

Census field staff play a critical role in the quality and accuracy of the data collected in the Census. In 2016, field staff will perform a different role than they have traditionally played in the Census, but they will be just as important.

The ABS is changing the way it conducts the Census in 2016, with more than 65 per cent of households expected to participate online. The ABS will be using more technology in the 2016 Census, and as a result, Census field staff will too.

Census field staff are required for a variety of short-term supervisory and non-supervisory jobs between April and September 2014. These non-office jobs require work in urban, rural and remote communities of Australia.

The rates of pay range from $20 to $34 (including casual loading) per hour, plus allowances.

Around 50 Census Area Supervisors and 380 Census Field Officers will be hired, throughout Western and South Australia.

Census Area Supervisors will train, lead and supervise a team of Census Field Officers, and perform routine clerical and other operational tasks. Census Field Officers deliver Census materials, conduct personal interviews and make follow-up house calls.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, be an Australian citizen, and able to commit between 25 to 35 hours a week, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays as required. They will need a driver’s licence and access to a vehicle in some areas.

Applicants must be computer literate and ideally have a home computer with access to the internet.

Applicant Information Kits are available from the ABS website, and candidates can apply online at www.abs.gov.au/careers
