National Refugee Week (20 – 26 June) celebrates the contribution of refugees to society, and the resilience it takes to build a new life in Australia. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of Census data to support migrant communities including refugees.

The Census provides a snapshot of the diversity of cultures and languages that make up Australia. Organisations like Welcoming Australia rely on Census data to design initiatives that support refugees – including Welcoming Cities, a national network of local councils working to help people feel welcomed across Australia.

“Census data provides an evidence-based approach for decision making. Combined with local council knowledge, this gives a holistic view to confirm or challenge assumptions about what migrants need to settle well into a new country.” Aleem Ali, CEO of Welcoming Australia said.

Hala Kattab, Census Engagement Manager said it’s important to capture the changing face of communities in the Census.

“This will be the second Census I’ve worked on. I love to help local communities understand the importance of being counted. The role has helped me gain so many valuable experiences and I really feel like I’ve made a difference,”

‘With six weeks to go until the Census, I encourage everyone – our new and also long-time migrants – to participate, so accurate data can continue to help organisations and governments make informed decisions to benefit our changing migrant communities.’ Hala said.

Instructions on how to participate will be sent to households in early August. People can complete online, by paper, or with help from Census staff.
