International trade

• The seasonally adjusted balance on goods increased $1,421m in October.
• Goods credits (exports) rose $1,456m (3.6%) driven by Other mineral fuels.
• Goods debits (imports) rose $35m (0.1%) driven by Processed industrial supplies n.e.s.

• Australia's balance on goods and services was a surplus at $54.8b in 2023-24.
• Total goods and services exports (credits) fell $28.6b (4.2%) to $659.4b.
• Total goods and services imports (debits) rose $28.8b (5.0%) to $604.6b.

• The current account balance, seasonally adjusted, rose $2,202m to a deficit of $14,149m.
• The capital and financial account surplus was $20,084m, an increase of $2,658m on the June quarter 2024 surplus. 
• The net international investment liability position was $716,547m at 30 September 2024.

• Australia’s IIP was a liability of $836.6b at 31 December 2023, a decline of $107.5b from the end of 2022.
• Foreign investment in Australia rose $62.8b to $4,659.5b.
• Australian investment abroad rose $170.3b to $3,822.9b.

• Australia's balance on goods and services was a surplus of $144,309m in 2023
• Total goods and services exports rose $1,770m (0.3%) to $671,077m
• Total goods and services imports rose $13,470m (2.6%) to $526,768m

In 2020-21:

• The number of importers increased by 23%, to 320,502
• The merchandise imports value increased by 3%, to $309 billion.
• The number of business importers increased by 6%, to 124,507.
• 56% of business importers traded at least once with China.

As at March 31 2022:

• Australian resident enterprises had a net asset foreign currency balance sheet exposure of $2,389.9b.
• An increase of $1,328.8b (125.2%) from 31 March 2017.
• This is after taking account of hedging through the use of derivative contracts.

• The number of exporters increased marginally to 56,274.
• The total value of merchandise exports reached a record high of $382b.
• 62% of all exporters were small exporters.
• The mining industry was the only industry to see an increase in the number of exporters in 2019-20, increasing 4%.

• Australian owned foreign affiliates total number of employees were 412,000.
• Australian owned foreign affiliates total sales of goods and services were $213,044m.
• Total assets of all Australian owned foreign affiliates were $1,956,303m.
