Demographics & education

In the 2011 Census, there were 461 people in Jerusalem of these 50.1% were male and 49.9% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 2.4% of the population.

The median age of people in Jerusalem was 34 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 29.2% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 9.9% of the population.

Of people in Jerusalem aged 15 years and over, 57.5% were married and 10.7% were either divorced or separated.

The median age of married people in Jerusalem was 46 years and the median age of people never married was 26 years.

In Jerusalem, of people aged 15 years and over, 59.1% of people were in a registered marriage and 8.4% were in a de facto marriage.

In Jerusalem 30.3% of people were attending an educational institution. Of these, 57.4% were in primary school, 21.3% in secondary school and 3.5% in a tertiary or technical institution.

The most common ancestries in Jerusalem were Australian 37.1%, English 34.4%, Scottish 5.3%, German 5.3% and Irish 4.9%.

In Jerusalem, 91.3% of people were born in Australia. The only other responses for country of birth were England 4.1%, Netherlands 0.9% and New Zealand 0.9%.

In Jerusalem, 84.4% of people had both parents born in Australia and 7.9% of people had both parents born overseas.

The most common responses for religion in Jerusalem were No Religion 32.1%, Uniting Church 25.4%, Anglican 9.9%, Catholic 9.1% and Christian, nfd 2.8%.

In Jerusalem 98.1% of people only spoke English at home. There were no other responses for language spoken at home.

Employment

There were 215 people who reported being in the labour force in the week before Census night in Jerusalem. Of these 50.7% were employed full time, 36.7% were employed part-time and 4.2% were unemployed.

Of employed people in Jerusalem, 11.3% worked 1 to 15 hours, 14.2% worked 16 to 24 hours and 39.2% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Jerusalem was 40 years and for people who were employed part-time was 39 years.

The most common occupations in Jerusalem included Technicians and Trades Workers 22.3%, Labourers 14.4%, Community and Personal Service Workers 11.9%, Sales Workers 11.4%, Professionals 10.4%, Machinery Operators And Drivers 10.4%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 9.9% and Managers 7.9%.

Of the employed people in Jerusalem, the most common responses for industry of employment included Residential Care Services 5.9%, School Education 4.4%, Sheep, Beef Cattle and Grain Farming 3.9%, Building Installation Services 3.9% and Road Freight Transport 3.9%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Jerusalem was $498.

In Jerusalem, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 66.3%, Car, as passenger 6.9%, Walked only 2.5%, Bus 2.0% and Truck 1.5%. On the day, 1.5% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 73.2% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

In Jerusalem, of people aged 15 years and over, 72.3% did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census. During the two weeks before the Census, 39.1% provided care for children and 12.6% assisted family members or others due to a disability, long term illness or problems related to old age. In the year before the Census, 32.8% of people did voluntary work through an organisation or a group.

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Jerusalem, 27.1% worked 5 to 14 hours, 13.5% worked 15 to 29 hours and 16.3% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Jerusalem, 50.8% were couple families with children, 31.0% were couple families without children and 18.3% were one parent families.

In Jerusalem 21.1% of single parents were male and 78.9% were female.

Weekly incomes

In Jerusalem, for couple families with two incomes, the median income for those with children was $1,733 and those without children was $1,042.
