Demographics & education

In the 2011 Census, there were 72,392 people in Northern Tablelands of these 48.9% were male and 51.1% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 6.3% of the population.

The median age of people in Northern Tablelands was 41 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 19.8% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 18.1% of the population.

Of people in Northern Tablelands aged 15 years and over, 48.8% were married and 11.8% were either divorced or separated.

The median age of married people in Northern Tablelands was 54 years and the median age of people never married was 24 years.

In Northern Tablelands, of people aged 15 years and over, 50.5% of people were in a registered marriage and 9.9% were in a de facto marriage.

In Northern Tablelands 32.1% of people were attending an educational institution. Of these, 26.2% were in primary school, 21.8% in secondary school and 23.3% in a tertiary or technical institution.

The most common ancestries in Northern Tablelands were Australian 34.4%, English 30.8%, Irish 9.3%, Scottish 8.2% and German 3.9%.

In Northern Tablelands, 86.8% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were England 1.9%, New Zealand 0.8%, United States of America 0.4%, China (excludes SARs and Taiwan) 0.4% and Germany 0.3%.

In Northern Tablelands, 82.4% of people had both parents born in Australia and 9.6% of people had both parents born overseas.

The most common responses for religion in Northern Tablelands were Anglican 32.3%, Catholic 22.6%, No Religion 16.5%, Presbyterian and Reformed 6.2% and Uniting Church 4.8%.

In Northern Tablelands 92.2% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Arabic 0.3%, Mandarin 0.3%, German 0.3%, Italian 0.2% and Cantonese 0.1%.

Employment

There were 32,383 people who reported being in the labour force in the week before Census night in Northern Tablelands. Of these 57.2% were employed full time, 30.4% were employed part-time and 6.6% were unemployed.

Of employed people in Northern Tablelands, 12.2% worked 1 to 15 hours, 9.4% worked 16 to 24 hours and 43.5% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Northern Tablelands was 45 years and for people who were employed part-time was 43 years.

The most common occupations in Northern Tablelands included Managers 20.0%, Professionals 16.9%, Labourers 12.9%, Technicians and Trades Workers 12.4%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 11.3%, Community and Personal Service Workers 10.2%, Sales Workers 9.3% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 5.4%.

Of the employed people in Northern Tablelands, the most common responses for industry of employment included Sheep, Beef Cattle and Grain Farming 13.8%, School Education 6.3%, Tertiary Education 4.8%, Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 3.4% and Local Government Administration 3.0%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Northern Tablelands was $444.

In Northern Tablelands, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 59.4%, Car, as passenger 6.3%, Walked only 6.2%, Truck 2.2% and Other 1.0%. On the day, 0.7% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 66.0% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

In Northern Tablelands, of people aged 15 years and over, 70.2% did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census. During the two weeks before the Census, 26.0% provided care for children and 12.4% assisted family members or others due to a disability, long term illness or problems related to old age. In the year before the Census, 26.6% of people did voluntary work through an organisation or a group.

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Northern Tablelands, 25.2% worked 5 to 14 hours, 13.6% worked 15 to 29 hours and 12.4% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Northern Tablelands, 38.2% were couple families with children, 44.2% were couple families without children and 16.1% were one parent families.

In Northern Tablelands 18.5% of single parents were male and 81.5% were female.

Weekly incomes

In Northern Tablelands, for couple families with two incomes, the median income for those with children was $1,761 and those without children was $1,459.

Of occupied private dwellings in Northern Tablelands, 40.0% were owned outright, 27.4% were owned with a mortgage and 28.5% were rented.

Household composition

Number of motor vehicles

In Northern Tablelands, 36.1% of occupied private dwellings had one registered motor vehicle garaged or parked at their address, 34.5% had two registered motor vehicles and 17.9% had three or more registered motor vehicles.

People characteristics

In Northern Tablelands, there were 4,542 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Of these, 2,240 (or 49.3%) were male and 2,302 (or 50.7%) were female. The median age was 20 years.
