Demographics & education

In the 2011 Census, there were 5,354,042 people in Victoria of these 49.2% were male and 50.8% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 0.7% of the population.

The median age of people in Victoria was 37 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 18.7% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 14.2% of the population.

Of people in Victoria aged 15 years and over, 49.1% were married and 10.7% were either divorced or separated.

The median age of married people in Victoria was 50 years and the median age of people never married was 25 years.

In Victoria, of people aged 15 years and over, 49.4% of people were in a registered marriage and 8.7% were in a de facto marriage.

The median age of people in a registered marriage in Victoria was 50 years and the median age of people in a de facto marriage was 35 years.

In Victoria 30.2% of people were attending an educational institution. Of these, 25.4% were in primary school, 21.4% in secondary school and 22.5% in a tertiary or technical institution.

Cultural & language diversity

The most common ancestries in Victoria were English 23.5%, Australian 23.3%, Irish 7.6%, Scottish 6.4% and Italian 4.8%.

In Victoria, 68.6% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were England 3.2%, India 2.1%, China (excludes SARs and Taiwan) 1.8%, New Zealand 1.5% and Italy 1.4%.

In Victoria, 50.4% of people had both parents born in Australia and 38.1% of people had both parents born overseas.

The most common responses for religion in Victoria were Catholic 26.7%, No Religion 24.0%, Anglican 12.3%, Uniting Church 4.7% and Eastern Orthodox 4.3%.

In Victoria 72.4% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Italian 2.3%, Greek 2.2%, Mandarin 1.9%, Vietnamese 1.6% and Cantonese 1.4%.

Employment

There were 2,675,476 people who reported being in the labour force in the week before Census night in Victoria. Of these 59.2% were employed full time, 29.6% were employed part-time and 5.4% were unemployed.

Of employed people in Victoria, 11.4% worked 1 to 15 hours, 9.7% worked 16 to 24 hours and 44.9% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Victoria was 40 years and for people who were employed part-time was 40 years.

The most common occupations in Victoria included Professionals 22.3%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 14.4%, Technicians and Trades Workers 13.9%, Managers 13.2%, Sales Workers 9.7%, Community and Personal Service Workers 9.3%, Labourers 9.0% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 6.1%.

Of the employed people in Victoria, the most common responses for industry of employment included School Education 4.4%, Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 4.2%, Hospitals 3.9%, Supermarket and Grocery Stores 2.4% and Legal and Accounting Services 2.2%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Victoria was $561.

In Victoria, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 61.4%, Train 4.8%, Car, as passenger 4.6%, Walked only 3.3% and Tram 1.7%. On the day, 11.1% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 66.2% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

In Victoria, of people aged 15 years and over, 69.3% did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census. During the two weeks before the Census, 27.3% provided care for children and 11.3% assisted family members or others due to a disability, long term illness or problems related to old age. In the year before the Census, 17.7% of people did voluntary work through an organisation or a group.

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Victoria, 24.9% worked 5 to 14 hours, 11.5% worked 15 to 29 hours and 9.7% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Victoria, 46.0% were couple families with children, 36.7% were couple families without children and 15.5% were one parent families.

In Victoria 17.2% of single parents were male and 82.8% were female.

Weekly incomes

In Victoria, for couple families with two incomes, the median income for those with children was $2,242 and those without children was $2,046.

In Victoria, of couple families with children, 21.0% had both partners employed full-time, 3.8% had both employed part-time and 22.5% had one employed full-time and the other part-time.

In Victoria, 34.7% of occupied private dwellings had one registered motor vehicle garaged or parked at their address, 37.0% had two registered motor vehicles and 16.8% had three or more registered motor vehicles.

People characteristics

In Victoria, there were 37,990 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Of these, 18,675 (or 49.2%) were male and 19,315 (or 50.8%) were female. The median age was 22 years.
