Demographics & education

In the 2011 Census, there were 21,507,717 people in Australia of these 49.4% were male and 50.6% were female. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 2.5% of the population.

The median age of people in Australia was 37 years. Children aged 0 - 14 years made up 19.3% of the population and people aged 65 years and over made up 14.0% of the population.

Of people in Australia aged 15 years and over, 48.7% were married and 11.5% were either divorced or separated.

The median age of married people in Australia was 50 years and the median age of people never married was 25 years.

In Australia, of people aged 15 years and over, 49.2% of people were in a registered marriage and 9.5% were in a de facto marriage.

The median age of people in a registered marriage in Australia was 50 years and the median age of people in a de facto marriage was 35 years.

In Australia 30.2% of people were attending an educational institution. Of these, 27.0% were in primary school, 20.5% in secondary school and 21.6% in a tertiary or technical institution.

Cultural & language diversity

The most common ancestries in Australia were English 25.9%, Australian 25.4%, Irish 7.5%, Scottish 6.4% and Italian 3.3%.

In Australia, 69.8% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were England 4.2%, New Zealand 2.2%, China (excludes SARs and Taiwan) 1.5%, India 1.4% and Italy 0.9%.

In Australia, 53.7% of people had both parents born in Australia and 34.3% of people had both parents born overseas.

The most common responses for religion in Australia were Catholic 25.3%, No Religion 22.3%, Anglican 17.1%, Uniting Church 5.0% and Presbyterian and Reformed 2.8%.

In Australia 76.8% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Mandarin 1.6%, Italian 1.4%, Arabic 1.3%, Cantonese 1.2% and Greek 1.2%.

Employment

There were 10,658,460 people who reported being in the labour force in the week before Census night in Australia. Of these 59.7% were employed full time, 28.7% were employed part-time and 5.6% were unemployed.

Of employed people in Australia, 10.8% worked 1 to 15 hours, 9.4% worked 16 to 24 hours and 45.3% worked 40 hours or more.

The median age of people employed full-time in Australia was 40 years and for people who were employed part-time was 40 years.

The most common occupations in Australia included Professionals 21.3%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 14.7%, Technicians and Trades Workers 14.2%, Managers 12.9%, Community and Personal Service Workers 9.7%, Labourers 9.4%, Sales Workers 9.4% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 6.6%.

Of the employed people in Australia, the most common responses for industry of employment included School Education 4.6%, Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 4.1%, Hospitals 3.6%, Supermarket and Grocery Stores 2.3% and Legal and Accounting Services 2.1%.

The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Australia was $577.

In Australia, on the day of the Census, the most common methods of travel to work for employed people included Car, as driver 60.2%, Car, as passenger 5.3%, Train 3.9%, Walked only 3.7% and Bus 3.0%. On the day, 10.4% of employed people used public transport (train, bus, ferry, tram/light rail) as at least one of their methods of travel to work and 65.8% used car (either as driver or as passenger).

In Australia, of people aged 15 years and over, 70.0% did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census. During the two weeks before the Census, 27.8% provided care for children and 10.9% assisted family members or others due to a disability, long term illness or problems related to old age. In the year before the Census, 17.8% of people did voluntary work through an organisation or a group.

Of people who did unpaid domestic work in the week before the Census in Australia, 25.6% worked 5 to 14 hours, 12.0% worked 15 to 29 hours and 10.1% worked 30 hours or more.

Family composition

Of the families in Australia, 44.6% were couple families with children, 37.8% were couple families without children and 15.9% were one parent families.

In Australia 17.6% of single parents were male and 82.4% were female.

Weekly incomes

In Australia, for couple families with two incomes, the median income for those with children was $2,310 and those without children was $2,081.

Employment status of couple families

In Australia, of couple families with children, 21.7% had both partners employed full-time, 3.7% had both employed part-time and 21.4% had one employed full-time and the other part-time.

Household composition

In Australia, of all households, 71.5% were family households, 24.3% were single person households and 4.1% were group households.

In Australia, 23.7% of households had a weekly household income of less than $600 and 11.2% of households had a weekly income of more than $3,000.

Number of motor vehicles

In Australia, 35.8% of occupied private dwellings had one registered motor vehicle garaged or parked at their address, 36.1% had two registered motor vehicles and 16.5% had three or more registered motor vehicles.

People characteristics

In Australia, there were 548,368 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Of these, 270,331 (or 49.3%) were male and 278,037 (or 50.7%) were female. The median age was 21 years.
