Demographics & education

In the 2006 Census, 24,631 people were usually resident in 2010: of these 59.1% were male and 40.9% were female. Of the total population 0.7% were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

In the 2006 Census, 5.2% of people usually resident in 2010 were children aged 0-14 years, and 15.9% were people aged 55 years and over. The median age was 34 years.

In the 2006 Census, 52.5% of people usually resident in 2010 were Australian citizens, 30.8% were born overseas and 4.9% people were overseas visitors.

In the 2006 Census, 18.8% of people aged 15 years and over usually resident in 2010 were married, 11.0% were either separated or divorced, 2.9% were widowed and 67.3% were never married.

Cultural & language diversity

In the 2006 Census, 38.4% of people usually resident in 2010, stated they were born in Australia. Other common responses for country of birth were England 4.9%, New Zealand 3.7%, China 2.0%, Thailand 1.3% and United States of America 1.0%.

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for religious affiliation for people usually resident in 2010 were No Religion 24.0%, Catholic 16.3%, Anglican 9.1%, Buddhism 4.1% and Eastern Orthodox 1.8%.

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in 2010 were Cantonese 2.0%, Mandarin 1.6%, Thai 1.2%, Greek 0.9% and Korean 0.8%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 52.6%.

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 12,906 people aged 15 years and over in 2010 were in the labour force. Of these 71.6% worked full-time, 19.6% worked part-time, 2.9% were away from work, 1.2% were employed but did not state their hours worked and 4.7% were unemployed. 3,500 people were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for occupation for 2010 were Professionals 40.4%, Managers 16.8%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 13.0%, Community and Personal Service Workers 8.6%, Sales Workers 7.4%, Technicians and Trades Workers 7.0%, Labourers 3.8% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 1.2%.

In the 2006 Census, of the employed people aged 15 years and over in 2010, the most common responses for industry of employment included Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 5.5%, Legal and Accounting Services 5.0%, Auxiliary Finance and Investment Services 3.9%, Hospitals 3.4% and Architectural, Engineering and Technical Services 3.4%.

In the 2006 Census in 2010, the median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over who were usual residents was $825, the median family income was $2,100 and the median household income was $1,379.

Family composition

In the 2006 Census, there were 3,564 families in 2010: of these 72.7% were couple families without children, 15.0% were couple families with children, 7.7% were one parent families and 4.6% were other families.

In the 2006 Census in 2010, 26.8% of occupied private dwellings were family households, 33.0% were single (or lone) person households and 10.7% were group households.
