Demographics & education

In the 2006 Census, 5,550 people were usually resident in 2007: of these 52.5% were male and 47.5% were female. Of the total population 0.5% were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

In the 2006 Census, 6.0% of people usually resident in 2007 were children aged 0-14 years, and 11.0% were people aged 55 years and over. The median age was 28 years.

In the 2006 Census, 37.0% of people usually resident in 2007 were Australian citizens, 47.2% were born overseas and 7.4% people were overseas visitors.

In the 2006 Census, 23.5% of people aged 15 years and over usually resident in 2007 were married, 8.1% were either separated or divorced, 1.9% were widowed and 66.4% were never married.

Cultural & language diversity

In the 2006 Census, 21.3% of people usually resident in 2007, stated they were born in Australia. Other common responses for country of birth were China 12.5%, Indonesia 3.3%, Korea, Republic of 2.8%, Hong Kong 2.4% and Malaysia 2.4%.

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for religious affiliation for people usually resident in 2007 were No Religion 25.0%, Catholic 12.2%, Buddhism 8.9%, Anglican 5.1% and Hinduism 2.2%.

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in 2007 were Mandarin 10.7%, Cantonese 10.1%, Indonesian 2.8%, Korean 2.5% and Thai 1.9%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 28.2%.

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 2,449 people aged 15 years and over in 2007 were in the labour force. Of these 60.1% worked full-time, 25.7% worked part-time, 2.9% were away from work, 2.0% were employed but did not state their hours worked and 9.4% were unemployed. 1,157 people were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for occupation for 2007 were Professionals 33.6%, Clerical and Administrative Workers 15.5%, Sales Workers 11.1%, Managers 11.0%, Community and Personal Service Workers 9.6%, Technicians and Trades Workers 8.4%, Labourers 6.1% and Machinery Operators And Drivers 2.1%.

In the 2006 Census, of the employed people aged 15 years and over in 2007, the most common responses for industry of employment included Cafes, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services 9.1%, Tertiary Education 4.7%, Legal and Accounting Services 4.6%, Computer System Design and Related Services 3.9% and Depository Financial Intermediation 3.2%.

In the 2006 Census in 2007, the median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over who were usual residents was $431, the median family income was $1,239 and the median household income was $938.

Family composition

In the 2006 Census, there were 811 families in 2007: of these 57.6% were couple families without children, 20.6% were couple families with children, 11.8% were one parent families and 10.0% were other families.

In the 2006 Census in 2007, the median weekly rent was $335. The median monthly mortgage repayment was $1,904. The average people per household was 2.0 and the average number of people per bedroom was 1.4.

Household composition

In the 2006 Census in 2007, 27.0% of occupied private dwellings were family households, 25.0% were single (or lone) person households and 12.6% were group households.
