Demographics

In the 2006 Census (held on 8th August 2006), there were 4,337 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people usually resident in Kununurra, 48.2% were male and 51.8% were female.

In the 2006 Census, 36.7% of the population usually resident in Kununurra were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-14 years, 8.8% were aged 55 years and over and the median age was 21 years.

Language diversity

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for Indigenous language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in Kununurra were Kukatja 8.9%, Jaru 6.6%, Miriwoong 4.4%, Kriol 4.1% and Kija 3.1%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 62.0% resident in Kununurra

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 1,257 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over in Kununurra were in the labour force. Of these 91.6% were employed and 8.4% were unemployed. 1,214 were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, 29.5% of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over who were usually resident in Kununurra had completed Year 10 or equivalent, and 10.5% had completed Year 12 or equivalent. 3.4% aged 15-19 years were in full-time education and 25.6% aged 15 years and over had a qualification.

In the 2006 Census in Kununurra, the median weekly individual income for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over was $222 and the median household income was $642. The median weekly rent was $50 and the median monthly mortgage repayment was $867. The average household size was 4.3 and the average number of people per bedroom was 1.9.
