Demographics

In the 2006 Census (held on 8th August 2006), there were 573 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people usually resident in Mid-Western Regional (A), 49.6% were male and 50.4% were female.

In the 2006 Census, 41.2% of the population usually resident in Mid-Western Regional (A) were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-14 years, 9.8% were aged 55 years and over and the median age was 18 years.

Language diversity

In the 2006 Census, the most common response for Indigenous language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in Mid-Western Regional (A) was Aboriginal English, so described 0.5%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 96.3% resident in Mid-Western Regional (A)

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 191 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over in Mid-Western Regional (A) were in the labour force. Of these 85.9% were employed and 14.1% were unemployed. 141 were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, 33.6% of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over who were usually resident in Mid-Western Regional (A) had completed Year 10 or equivalent, and 17.9% had completed Year 12 or equivalent. 11.0% aged 15-19 years were in full-time education and 38.7% aged 15 years and over had a qualification.

In the 2006 Census in Mid-Western Regional (A), the median weekly individual income for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people aged 15 years and over was $279 and the median household income was $644. The median weekly rent was $145 and the median monthly mortgage repayment was $1,083. The average household size was 3.2 and the average number of people per bedroom was 1.2.
