In the 2006 Census (held on 8th August 2006), there were 1,236 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people usually resident in Bathurst Regional (A), 58.7% were male and 41.3% were female.

In the 2006 Census, 32.8% of the population usually resident in Bathurst Regional (A) were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-14 years, 6.1% were aged 55 years and over and the median age was 22 years.

Language diversity

In the 2006 Census, the most common responses for Indigenous language other than English spoken at home by people usually resident in Bathurst Regional (A) were Aboriginal English, so described 0.6% and Wiradjuri 0.2%. English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 76.5% resident in Bathurst Regional (A)

Employment

During the week prior to the 2006 Census, 302 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over in Bathurst Regional (A) were in the labour force. Of these 79.8% were employed and 20.2% were unemployed. 495 were not in the labour force.

In the 2006 Census, 20.7% of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, aged 15 years and over who were usually resident in Bathurst Regional (A) had completed Year 10 or equivalent, and 16.5% had completed Year 12 or equivalent. 8.3% aged 15-19 years were in full-time education and 53.1% aged 15 years and over had a qualification.

The median weekly rent was $158 and the median monthly mortgage repayment was $1,213. The average household size was 3.2 and the average number of people per bedroom was 1.2.
